Ice racing in Ontario/Quebec?

I have recently made contact with a guy who knows of an organized ice road race course. I heard its about 4km long on or near rice lake just north of Port Hope. I am still trying to get more information myself, if you guys have interest in this let me know and I will get back on this thread.

Thats perfect! Don't know if you have ever heard of extreme international ice racing but they are coming to Oshawa Feb 11th and are looking for local riders. Is there anyway you could put me in contact with who ever organizes that ice race?

Me too Rob

I'd love to watch

there is people with no common sense
Frozen lakes seem to bring out the idiot in people! I manage to use it safely every winter as do thousands more, hats off! It's pure fluke there aren't more deaths and injuries. The lake is public domain, as such all need to respect one another, walkers, sledders, riders, boarders, fisherman etc. Each year I am blown away by how fast some guys ride while near pedestrians, slow the f*ck down you are not impressing anyone. For those using common sense thank you. Lets have a safe winter out there!

This is a traveling road show. They go from arena to arena. This is at the GM Center where the Oshawa Generals play. The bikes they use are speedway bikes which are spiked up (Spikes not studs) You might be hard pressed to get your MX bike out with these guys. Plus those boards are close !!!

There also has been an group that goes up to port perry on the east side of the island/casino during the winter and ride there away for the the people at Port Perry downtown. Memory serves me that it was a snowmobiler who jumped the banks on the track and was killed when it was close to town as this was close to "drag racing" area that sleds use on port perry.

I rode the rice lake track last year, It was right around 7km supermoto style. absolutely awesome. they welcome a "donation" of 20$ for plowing. It's on sundays, not sactioned racing but still a lot of fun. idiots aren't welcome, you will likely be asked to leave. treat it like your local race track. it's right infront of bewdly. george jones is always out there (he sells built ice tires) guy's a legend. you can build your own ice tires but it takes a few tries(like 10) to get a decent set up. still not as good as built tires but, way faster than the vid on here(faster on ice) george gave me some tips last year to built mine made a night and day difference. there's usually a decent turn-out 20 or so bikes.
It's not my place to Invite anyone, but aslong as some respect is shown there shouldn't be a problem.

Okay gang, it's official now, you can stud your own sport bike tires and come out and join us next season...

I built the rear tire while in the SOAR booth at the January Toronto Motorcycle Show.
I had the tires mounted on the bike for display in the SOAR booth at the London Motorcycle show.
Here are a few of the quotes I heard those two separate weekends...

"I've been ice racing for years and...
"Ha, those won't work"
"Those are gonna bend"
"They will break off"
"Those are gonna tear right out of the carcass"
"Are those race tires? The carcass is going to crack up in the cold temps"
"You'll spin the tire on the rim"
"You need a bead locker"
"You're gonna tear the valve stem out"
"Ice tires are all about stud pattern" - This one I'll agree with.
"Building ice tires is an art" - Maybe it is, guess I'm an artist, who knew?

It was my first day out on the ice with my homemade ice tires and I think it went well, I learned how to improve the studding for my next set.
Still have all my studs, tubes are fine, no holes in my rad or cases from a thrown stud or scratches on my swingarm.
I didn't feel like crashing on the first test day so I didn't push it through the turns but you can see from the vid that I was going like 50 Km in the turns of their oval.
On the straight speed runs I had it up to 160 Km/h, 102 Mph on my speedo at 2:32 of the vid.
This vid is a split screen of a helmet GoPro and video camera.

Here's the video...

I'm reviving this.... because I need something to do this winter and am dying to try this lol.

I'll gladly volunteer my time to create an ice-racing arena/track.

Other than a lake.... what type of land/terrain is ideal for ice racing?

a lake, unless you plan to make the ice, and then you're simply making a small, shallow lake in the shape of a track.

It's much easier to simply plow a track on a lake/pond and leave the ice making to Ma nature.

If you want something to do, buy an MX bike and you can ride all winter, on ice, indoors and just about anything in between.

Ice Riders,
Please give TrackdayHub magazine some dates for ice racing
in Ontario and we will announce them and give coverage when
we can throughout the winter. All contributions welcome.

Well, winter is on its way. Hope we get some ice this time. Anyone getting prepared for ice riding? I'm getting new tires and preparing my quad for some high speed sled spanking down the rivers and lakes!!!

oh it's fast... there are sleds that will run faster in a straight line but when it comes to some twisties they don't have a chance. Many times I have waited at the end of the Holland river and when they catch up they are just shaking their heads in disbelief... lol
