Just got my M1 and will be starting my course next week. I am petite and one of my biggest fears are not being able to control/balance a bike. And being a lady, I am also concerned about how I may be treated in general (less seriously, objectified, etc). Could other ladies please post and let me know there are more of you out there? Where do you hang out on these forums? Is there a sub-forum for us? What has your experience been when you first started? And what are some tips/advice you can give me? Thanks!

ETA: I also have some newbie questions I hope someone could answer for me (mostly directed at women).

1) What is insurance like for women (Age 25 - 30)? Who are you with?
2) What is your height and what bike do you ride?
3) How do you deal with sexual harassment (on and off your bike?)
4) There is an overwhelming amount of information everywhere, where should I start?
5) What helped you decide on your first bike?
6) I don't plan on ever taking passengers but have you? How was it?

Hey all,

I'm a new "rider", got my M1 around 3 weeks ago. Have called a few insurance companies and got a decent quote at state farm insurance. Currently looking for a bike (most likely 08-10 Ninja 250r).

I do still have to do the motorcycle safety course, which requires you to come with your own gear.

Helmet
Jacket
Pants
Gloves
Boots

Being a newbie and all...I have absolutely no clue as to what are considered good and reliable brands/types to buy. Gloves and Boots shouldn't be a problem to find, but I don't want to mess around with the helmet, jacket, and pants. I'm sure there are a lot of veterans and pros of bike riding on this forum, so I was wondering whether anyone could recommend me any good types of helmets/jacket/pants to purchase (for the safety course AND to ride after)?

Thanks a bunch in advance,

I have a 2007 Vstar 650, no fuel gauge. When I ride close to empty the bike starts to sputter and loss power. Lack of fuel obviously.

What is the best/proper method to switch to reserve?

Stop the bike, then switch while running?

Stop the bike, turn off and then switch?

Reach down and turn switch while navigating through down town traffic? (optionally trying to check oil window, while ur down there)

Doesn't really matter, same tank, different hose.

Reason I ask, last time I switch the sputtering did not really stop. Even after I filled up. Sat over night, warmed it up next day and it's been fine since. As long as the fuel level is up, I get no issues. (does sputter if cold and I start riding too soon)

About to take a 6hr ride to Blind River this weekend, solo and I want to avoid sputtering along half way up.

Hey guys,

I'm not actually quite a new rider yet, I'm taking my M1 as soon as possible, then doing a safety course there-after and looking at my M2.

Basically I'm looking to save up for next spring and get a bike then, but I also wanted to get some experience with the course, and lower my insurance if possible.
Thing is, I've been on bikes before; Pocket bikes and a dirtbike with a kick-shift.

Not sure what it is about it, but I'm nervous for the safety course, even though I'm positive I'll be fine. I understand the mechanics of the clutch and everything, I just think I'm going to over-think/do it; any tips?

Also; what are your opinions for a new gen Ninja 250, or a WRX250 as a starter bike? I'm not getting either one to impress anyone else, I just love both of these bikes.

Hi guys

Got my licence 4 years ago but never got around to buying and riding a bike until this year. Took the advises and bought a 2010 ninja 250 and been commuting and riding around since the weather turned acceptable. Like all new riders i have questions and would appreciate some feedback!

How often should i be cleaning/lubing the chain? Various answers don't seem to converge...

It seems i can't see directly behind me on my ninja.. is it because i'm too wide? 6' 200lb shouldn't be way too wide.. no? or do i just have to live with it

Everyone on the highway's doing 130-140 these days and i guess i have to follow suit. is it a safety issue if the bike is running at the high end? (no option to accelerate to get out of situations?), at 130 it's about 9-10k revs out of 13k redline

How dangerous are tar snakes on the highway? i've never noticed there are so many of them until now.. The bike seems to slide a bit and i try to get off of it.. but there's so many!

How recommended are these maintenance courses? I've done simple maintenance on cars like oil change, brake change, brake fluid bleed, etc... would a course be necessary or some reading should do it? Any recommendations?

If the bike fishtails on braking that means i should have given more front brakes right? When we're talking front providing 75% braking and rear 25% are we talking depressing both about the same amount?

You've probably heard it hundreds of times before but check your tire pressure. Don't say you'll do it before your next ride, because if you're like me you'll likely forget about it. Do it right now.

I recently found out that my tires were 10-12psi lower than the recommended pressure and I've been riding on those for a couple weeks now. Go on your manufacturers website and check what the recommended tire pressure is for the weight you'll be carrying (bike + rider + equipment) and use a bicycle pump with a gauge to fill up your tires.

I bought a digital gauge from Canadian Tire for $5 for accuracy and I recommend you do so as well.

Correct tire pressure makes a whole world of difference!

Some helpful links for understanding tire maintenance:

Pirelli: http://www.pirelli.com/tire/us/en/mo...out_tyres.html

Dunlop: http://www.dunlopmotorcycle.com/info...d-maintenance/

Michelin: http://www.michelin.ca/tires-101/tir...intenance.page

Ride save everybody.

P.S. If you've ridden for a while on the wrong tire pressure, make sure you check your treads for uneven wear and other abnormalities The tire guides posted above should help.
