Red Lights - late at night

I was just wondering whats the law regarding red lights that have the sensors in the road. Motorcycles aren't heavy enough to trigger the sensor so the light won't change and depending on the time and the intersection the chances of a car pulling up beside/behind you to trigger the sensor are pretty slim.

I know making a right hand turn and then pulling a quick U-Turn is an option, but its not always possible because some roads have islands that have no end in sight... (i.e. Hwy 7)

Its not about the weight of the motorcycle its about the magnetic field that it throws down to complete the loop on the censor. Try putting your engine right overtop of the top of the loops. You'll see three lines meeting at the top. Also some guys put their kickstands down ontop.

    Some people say magnets work.

Me personally? If theres no cars I'll wait a few seconds, look both ways, treat it as a malfunctiong stop sign (aka a 4 way stop) and proceed with caution.

Hmm I never knew that, I'll try that next time and see what happens... Ya I've treated a couple lights like a 4 way stop. You kind of have no choice after waiting 2-3 minutes at a light

On a serious note, there are two more optons: either to push the pedestrian button if there is one, or make a right turn and then a U-turn.

You can also contact whatever city your having issues with at red lights.

The city will come out and re adjust the sensors to be more sensitive.

DO NOT get off your motorcycle and leave it in the middle of the road.

You know what drives me nuts? When you're waiting at one of these lights, a car pulls up behind you and he stops RIGHT BEFORE THE LOOP! ARGHHHH!!!

Whenver i encounter this problem, i wait a minute, TOPS and then treat it as a 4 way. If there is absolutely no traffic, i just roll through.

I once talked to a cop about this situation and he told me that if it causes an accident, you'd still get charged, but if you're doing it with caution as suggested and it isn't wreckless or cause any harm, they'd never give someone a ticket over it... at least this cop sounded like he had some common sense..

If a stop light doesn't recognize your vehicle, then you can reasonably state that it is 'defective' after waiting for a reasonable period of time (a few minutes). A defective signal is to be treated as a 4-way stop, with appropriate precautions taken prior to proceeding through. This doesn't stop an officer from ticketing you for running the red but if you can state that you waited X number of minutes prior to proceeding, then did so with proper care and attention, you've got a shot in court.

I generally push the walk signal, where it is present.

its a know fact that once it becomes dark outside .....

all speed limits, and traffic signals become void for motorcycles.

    especially the faster ones.
