There is no excuse for beaking the law, now if the cop was any kind of a human being, he would excort you hospital.

    Re: hypothetical medical emergency

I got off one time doing 60 over (before street racing law). Told the officer I was rushing to the hospital as my wife was having a baby. It was a female cop I guess that helped. I also tried pushing my luck a lil, I asked her for an escort as the hospital was right beside my house, unfortunately it was a no go lol, she told me to slow it down.

    Re: hypothetical medical emergency

I thought about getting my girlfriend calling me on my cell phone everyday and leave me a bogus message saying something like

“you need to go to the hospital right now. Your brother have 1 hour left to live”

something along those lines. (I don’t have a brother by the way) so If I do get pull over maybe I can let the cop listen to the message and he might let me off.

Of course I never actually done it.

And this would be the cop which would say, oh wait, let me escort you to the hospital....

Rushing to see someone in the hospital is not an emergency.

They are being cared for in a hospital, right? You could never get there and it wouldn't affect the outcome.

This scenario happened to me once. The doctor told my wife if she wanted to see her father before he dies you better hurry to the hospital. I was rushing my wife to the hospital and we were pulled over doing about 110-120 in an 80 zone (hwy#5 north of Brantford). I explained the situation and he let us go, telling us to be careful. We arrived at the hospital, said our fairwells, and her father died that evening.

Heard of two such instances. In both cases the officer replied with words to the effect of, "Do you want to add to the number of people in hospital? Slow down."

If the person in question isn't in the vehicle with you, then it isn't a "medical emergency."

    True Story:

We were in a BIG group ride with some Americanos in Quebec. One of the Americans went down pretty hard he took out (with his body) one of those wooden stumps like the ones that hold a guardrail in place (except there was no rail). He was seriously messed up (ended up being OK after many surgeries and had to be airlifted after a few weeks to an American hospital). Anyway, we had an ER nurse from Quebec with us and she went in the ambulance, while a few of us followed it (I was riding her bike, so she could get home). Another part of the group went back towards Montreal, since we were near Tremblant, to let the girlfriend (maybe wife) know about it and help get her back up to the Hospital. We knew where they were staying, but didn't know phone numbers. Then another group stuck around by my bike at the accident scene (remember I was riding the nurse's bike).

Anyhoo the group that was going back to Montreal got stopped doing 160kph and after their story was confirmed, they were let go with a warning. One of the guys asked if they could go at least 120kph and the officer actually agreed.

    Re: hypothetical medical emergency

I got pulled over doing 160 in an 80 before while my buddy was bleading all over my car(before the 50 over law), Cop actually gave us an escort to the bowmanville hospital because "he will be in bigger trouble sitting waiting for an ambulance" and we had a parimedic buddy tending to him in the back. Now that I look back on it, it was kinda fun.

The quesiton is; would you get to the hospital quicker driving the speed limit or in the back of an ambulance?

    Re: hypothetical medical emergency

the scenario happened a couple times in the last year, one with the actual person in the vehicle that needed help, the cops issued tickets in both cases and it made the news and their words were along the lines of " it doesnt matter, you cannot break the law" thats why theres emergency vehicles to call.

its another one of our lovely government rulings, but if a cop was to issue a ticket on a legitimate emergency well then id hope karma would take care of that.

i had a situation where i had to rush my bro to the hospital i was running red lights and doing roughly 30km over the limit, i was waiting for the cops, hell i was ready to call them, but none ever showed up, if they did at that point i was within 10 min of the hospital and i dont think i would have stopped even if i saw those cherry's

    Re: hypothetical medical emergency

Not an immediate emergency, but my sister-in-law had just found out that her son was diagnosed with cancer and she was unaware that she was driving quite fast on the higway on her way to see him since she just got the news....she was pulled over and broke down in front of the cop - he saw that she was genuine about her son's plight and let her go.

He's fine too - 100% remission from what it looks like....

    Re: hypothetical medical emergency

In some jurisdictions the police will give clergy courtesy cards in case they are pulled over speeding. You are not supposed to use it because you are late for the golf course or you are late for happy hour, but if you are enroute to a hospital to be with a family before someone dies, the card is sort of like an "It's okay this time" pass.

Both OPP and RCMP used to give them out, don't know if they do anymore.

If you honestly think I would stop for a cop while a family member is on their death bed or a legit have-to-be-there-now excuse, than you have another thing coming. You can arrest me or ticket me after I see the family member.

Hell, they even let the guy who won the lottery get his winnings AND have a smoke. And that's not even close to a family member on their death bed.

Remember watching on American TV news about a Police officer that stopped a driver going into a hospital.
He chased the driver into the Hospital area and arrested him.
It was all recorded on his cam.
I believe his mother was dying and he was not there for her passing on.

He was removed and given a desk job.

Ya and his mother died while he was arguing with the cop outside...
How about the one where a cop pulled over an ambulance and was arguing with the driver while a patient was inside?? hahah
