this really sucks i feel sorry for the victims of the family.
this is why we need stronger penalties for these people. if you get your license taken away for good if you get cought painting your nails or driving drunk or talking on the the phone, people will prolly think 3 times before doing it.
Sadly, the people will probably only think 3 times about how not to get caught.

If a cop ever sees a person reading a newspaper or magazine or texting or putting on make up or playing a psp it should be an auto 6 month ban of the license and a 1000 dollar ticket.
Really thats just stupid, its some things you dont do while driving, I mean how would that woman feel if her kid (if she has one) was run over by a person because they were painting their finger nails.
Really every time my friend text's while driving, i tell him to fuken stop doing that **** (ironically, because of him slamming his breaks on a yellow during a rain storm while going 80, a friend rear ended him while almost rolling the car luckily it drifted sideways and when it hit his car it fixed it self right, all this while he was on the phone. Like really people are dumb)
If its tinted to the point you can not see the driver the cop pulls you over gives you a ticket, then cuts your window off. So you have to replace it and drive home in snow or rain with no window.

Once when I was riding on the 115, I was slowing down where the highway ends, and some stupid kid in a rusted up Toyota nearly rear ended me THREE TIMES, squealing his tires while braking. I had to pull over to make sure the dipshit didn't almost hit me again.
Ever since then I've been even more vigilant about watching my mirrors at intersections/speed changes like a hawk.
My condolences to the rider's family, and I hope that the book gets thrown at the driver.

I watch cars behind me until they stop, but I am not sure it will help. I do hope I never have to find out, but I can't see the drivers face in my mirror, so I can't tell if she is paying attention and if the car is traveling 60km/h, I am to sure I would have enough time to pull into a safe spot.

Always check your mirrors untill one or two cars are stopped behind you. I flash my brake lights at night and day to get their attention also.

There was a post about a dude stopping in 3rd gear. Maybe if the lady on the bike was in first and notice the renegade nail painting SUV flying up the rear she might have been able to accelerate out of the way. Maybe.
Even when you are stopped it doesn't mean you are not driving and should not be aware!
