    1992 rm 125 question...

hey guys i am interested in buying a 92 rm125 but it needs the top end rebuilt. since there is no bike shop open right now how much would it cost to rebuild it myself? i rebuilt my old rz350 twice and know my way around a 2 stroke pretty well just wondering what the parts are going to be worth to build it up before i buy it.

    thanks for any help.

other then this how are these bikes? i really enjoy my cousin's 85 yz80 puts a smile on my face every time i see it.

Take the pipe or the head off and see if it's a plated bore or sleeved(like your RZ). Sleeved is cheap, probably around $200-300 depending on what piston you use. A plated bore could cost $600+ if the plating has been worn away. I'd grab it if it's going for a few hundred.

    What happened to the motor?

If all it needs is a piston and rings it will cost you about $150 to do it yourself. If the cylinder needs work then a couple hundred more.

Did you ask why it need a piston?

I did a quick search and found out that it's a chrome plated bore, be prepared to hand out $300+ for a sleeve install or replating, around $500 once your done with gaskets and piston.

It's not worth it in my opinion unless the rest of it is in great shape. The small things add up quick and you can get a great running bike for $1500, you'll get to that number once your done.

2 stroke dirtbikes need the top-end refreshed about every year depending on the amount of use in the season. It's no big deal and if you did a RZ top end before, you will be able to knock this job off in a day when you get the parts. I've dealt with this guy-

    http://www.d4performance.com/page/page/3585739.htm

He seems very knowledgeable about dirtbike maintenance and has fair prices I think. An old 2 stroke needing to be rebuilt is completely normal and a fairly easy job...Go for the deal if it's a good one.
