Biker killed on DVP ramp
Novice rider sideswipes car, hits another head-on
By CHRIS DOUCETTE, SUN MEDIA
Last Updated: 19th October 2008, 4:06am
A 32-year-old "novice" motorcyclist was killed in a horrific crash yesterday that shut down a busy off-ramp from the Don Valley Parkway for most of the afternoon.
The man was driving from Bloor St. onto the DVP around 1:15 p.m. on his way to visit friends in Scarborough when he crashed into two oncoming vehicles on the ramp above the Bayview extension, Toronto Police said.
"For reasons that are unknown at this time, the motorcyclist crossed the centre line, side-swiped a westbound car and then hit a second oncoming vehicle head-on," Sgt. Tim Burrows, of Traffic Services, said.
The victim, a Toronto resident, was sent flying off his bike. He suffered fatal injuries, Burrows said.
Paramedics attempted to save the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The motorcycle lay in a crumpled heap in front of a blue Volkswagon hatch-back for several hours as collision reconstruction officers investigated the death -- Toronto's 45th fatality of the year and the third motorcyclist to be killed.
The off-ramp from the southbound DVP was closed until about 5:30 p.m. causing a backup of traffic on the busy highway.
Const. Mig Roberts, also of Traffic Services, said the motorcyclist possessed an M2 class driver's licence, which is obtained after a minimum of 60 days driving experience.
Police have not released the dead man's name because they are still trying to notify his family, who may live in India.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or who has information that could help with the investigation is urged to call police at 416-808-1900, or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS.

DVP-Bloor exit re-opens after fatal crash
Updated: Sat Oct. 18 2008 6:17:27 PM
ctvtoronto.ca
A fatal collision involving a motorcyclist left the Bloor exit off the Don Valley Parkway closed for much of the afternoon, affecting southbound traffic on the DVP.
"It happened just prior to 2 p.m. on the extension that runs between Bloor Street and the access to both the Bayview extension and the Don Valley Parkway," Sgt. Tim Burrows of the Toronto Police Service told ctvtoronto.ca on Saturday.
"It sounds like the motorcyclist drifted a little bit over the centre line coming in for the last curve before making his way towards the Don Valley," he said.
The 32-year-old novice motorcyclist sideswiped one car and then hit the following northbound car head-on, he said.
"He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics with Sunnybrook Hospital," Burrows said.
Police did a full reconstruction of the accident, he said.
That wasn't completed until around 5:30 p.m.
The traffic fatality is the 45th in Toronto this year and the third involving a motorcycle, Burrows said.
Police say they aren't likely to file charges against the other drivers. They are asking for witnesses to come forward.
