    alt. to 400

Not really a riding road so much as just a alternative. I travel the 400 to and from work everyday and to avoid the traffic I've been using WESTEN road as a alternative.straight line rolling hills as far north as HWY 9. speed limit changes, but when the 400 is backed on the weekends faster and far prettier than the HWY

Depends on where you live (east side of 400 or west)
When you get to 9 you can go west and take the first road on the right (South Canal Bank Rd) and then follow it under the 400 and make the first left. Take that right up to Canal Road and go east. Turn left on 5th sideroad, (easy to spot cuz you go across a narrow bridge over the canal), follow this up a hill and around a corner to the left, then it will take you to 10th side road. This will go right to Barrie or you can take hwy 88, 89, Innisfil Beach Rd, or Mapleview and head west back to the highway. This route is good if you live on the east side of the 400.

If you live on the west side when you hit 9 from weston, turn left, then make a right on River Rd (it's the third road on the right), and then follow it past Canal Rd (it turns into 5th sideroad after you cross over Canal Rd) then you will keep right when it meets up with 4th line, and then turn left on 5th sideroad again. When you hit 5th line make a left and then you need to make the first right to stay on 5th sideroad again. After that you can stay on it right to Barrie also. Or when you hit hwy 88, 89 Innisfil Beach Rd or Mapleview you get go east and jump on the highway again. This road is good if you live on the west side of the 400.

They may seem a little confusing when reading it but if you take a look at a map it's not that bad and once you do it you wont have any problems. I use these roads in the winter too when I want to pass a conga line of snow plows.

Although its a bit further west, hwy 27 is usually a pretty good drive.

I've been commuting on the 400 from Barrie as far as the 407 for the past 6 years on many different shifts. 27 is okay on a regular day if you are just looking for another route but if the 400 is jammed it's not a very good alternative. Yonge st is okay some days too but again if the 400 is jammed then Yonge and 27 both get jammed up quick.

Normally a nice little diversion but the 5th line is closed heading west from the 5th sideroad near the 400 to the 5th sideroad further from the sideroad heading north due to bridge (re)construction.

You'll have to go East under the 400 and work your way north. if you want to stay on the West side of the 400 then all the ODD lines south of Hwy 89 cross over the 400.
