RM vs KX vs CR vs YZ

Hey Guys,

New to dirt..my buddy got a '88 CR250 this season and just got back from a weekend of rippin around at my cottage.

So I'm lookin at getting a nicer used 125 or 250 2 stroke.

Is there really anything different between the major brands? Id like a KX if possible, but would like to know if there are anything i should look out for, or years to avoid..... or years to buy.

hey mike

if awalys been a yami guy. but there is no major difference between any of the factories. if your looking at the bikes from the same year. all 2smokes are pretty much equivalent. yami dominated from 2002-2005 in all the motocross circuits. but if you are lookin for a newer bike like a 2007 2008 model the ktm is probably the lightest and a honda is probably the cheapest to maintain.

Im a Honda boy, but really when it comes to 2-strokes they are basically all the same.

What years are you looking at? and how much are you looking to spend?

What do you figure the best mid to late 90's bike was. I def wont be buying new, as its just a summer toy for the cottage.

I see quite a few 98-2k1 RM's for like 2000-2500....

If your looking at anything newer than a 98 IMO Honda is the way to go.

Why would you say that?

maintence? Buddy is the Honda fan boy...so i kinda want something diff..

really leaning towards the RM or KX.......

Well Honda came out with the aluminium frame in 97 so your getting a much better bike IMO. Not sure when the other came out with them.

Maintaince depends on how you ride, but i generally spend 350 a season just doing the motor on the 2smoke.

I do not know of any issues with the KX in fact i've had two of them and both were great bikes.

For 2000-2500 you can find a easily find a 250 from 2000-2004. you might have to wait till the end of the season. but prices go down in september / mid october people dont want to store there bike so they just sell and end up getting a newer /09 moddle in april or w/e the reason prices on motorcycles/boats/ summer toys tend to fall in september/october. so you can wait it out buy it then do work on it during the winter and have a minty bike in april as soon as the season starts. just a thought

Ok....so can anyone tell me why a new CR250R is like $8200 MSRP, when a new RM250 is $6999??

Hey Cpt,

I'm selling both of my dirt bikes actually if your interested...

I've got a '96 RM 250 ($1500ish) that needs some work but i'd let it go cheap.
I've also got a '00 YZ 125($2300ish) that is raching tuned and just has all the mods...i guess two owners prior raced it, so it has all the latest and greatest reed valves and crap....i dunno...i have a list of it somewhere...
it runs mint and it's a lot of fun....i haven't fouled a single plug this season and its running dynamite...

You mentioned your new to dirt and well, my first dirt bike two years ago was my RM and it's a lot of power....i downgraded to the 125 and it's a blast...
Let me know if your interested....the 125 is at my house and my RM is in st.catharines....it'll be coming home in a bit...

Well like it was said earlier all 250cc bikes are pretty much equivalent. its self prefrence and buddget. if you shop at royal distributing all parts are about the same price. just see what you can get shop around once you find a good deal(there are lots of good deals for off road bikes) pay the man and load up your new toy.

Thanks...i think iv narrowed it down to the kawi or Ktm ( i like that ktm makes so many 2 strokes...125, 150, 200, 250, 300)....now to wait til the end of the season

If it is down two those two brands I would lean towards the KX. I like KTM however I know for a fact that they are a heck of alot of work to keep up (atleast the 4-strokes are)

i like how the KTM's look and the graphics..... just a lil worried about the lack of dealers
