The pic I posted in called "Scrubbing" in Motocross. It is generaly done over tabletops so a rider can stay low and reach the ground sooner vs just jumping the table normally.
Hitting the ground sooner means you can get your *** on the gas sooner. I will try and find another picture to show scrubbing vs non scrubbing.

Scrubbing can be done over any jump, just look at Supercross. The idea of scrubbing is that you can carry more speed into a jump without going as high (hang time) or as far (sucking up the jump). So you can hit a jump faster and land before the guy thats going slower and like 23 said reach the landing faster and keep going

James Stewart aka Bubba, does this extremely well and gains a huge advantage over other riders who don't.
I was talking about the picture all weekend so I figured i would post for those who were there.
