If this group has their way all residential speed limits will be 30kph.

They were on City TV at lunch talking about how it safer to be hit by a car at 30kph than 50kph.

They were saying how it's not safe for kids to play road hockey anymore.

I thought roads were for vehicles, playgrounds were for kids to play.

22 Kids were killed by cars last year, While the loss of any child is sad. But to lower every residential road in the country to 30kph is Crazy. . When asked by a call in caller what a residential road was her answer was any road with houses.

It's possible; I know there are some residents in that area who absolutely despise bikes. A 25 km/h speed limit is not even a legal speed limit according to HTA. The choices available (other than in a "park" which that road isn't) are 40 through 100 in 10 km/h increments. I've seen roads posted at 30 km/h in dense downtown Toronto neighborhoods. If you got a ticket on one of those roads, you could probably challenge it on the grounds that it is not a legal speed limit - but most of those roads are so tight and narrow and crowded that 30 feels too fast anyway ...

City by-laws let them change traffic calming zones (dense areas) to 30KM/H. The only place the limits can be under 30 are parks, which can be 20KM/H. So the 30 roads are legal according to the HTA.

on a week night.

LOL must have just drove them nuts May 25th when 1400 bikes from the BAD ride went through!! I hope the Harleys were really really annoying!!!

30kmh smashing to kids will kill them too. I vote to ban vehicle in residential area. all car must park outside residential and everyone has to walk home. keep the residential road for kids to play hockey or basketball. This is the safest way. Much safer than lower the speed limit to 30kmh.

+1 on what you said...Things have changed alot since I was a kid. My parents used to never see me until the street lights came on. I would be out and about exploring. Now you can't let your kids out of your sight for a few seconds cause there are tons of weirdo's out there just waiting to snatch them up. Very sad days we live in now.

Apparently the city of Montreal is trying to decide whether they'll change the speed limit for residential streets to 30 or 40 (can't remember which) right across the island.

Let's hope it doesn't go through, this type of idiocy is contageous...
