Think of how many planes they've paid for with the over $7 million in fines they've collected since this started 6 months ago.

120 drivers lose vehicles, licences

More than 120 people were charged over the long Easter weekend under the province's new street-racing law, the OPP said today.
"Unfortunately, people don't think about road safety on long weekends," OPP Sgt. Cam Woolley said this afternoon. "In fact, we see more dangerous behaviour." Woolley noted that some drivers who were pulled over were clocked at speeds two or three times above the posted speed limit.
The number of drivers charged is almost double the number charged on a normal weekend, Woolley said. About 3,500 have been charged with what is officially called "stunt driving" since the law came into effect last Sept. 30.
Drivers who are charged have their vehicles seized and their licences suspended for seven days. They also face fines up to $2,000.
Makes me wonder with 3500 charged during the Winter months, whats it going to be like during peak driving season.
I also think unfortunatly we will read about some very terrible motorcycle accidents this year from 'runners'.

I'm more interested in exactly who and how many were going 2 or 3 times the speed limit? 3 times the speed limit? exactly how many is 'some'

"They also face fines up to $2,000" no... it's up to $10,000... minimum of $2000
So let's see... 3500 people at $2000 = $7,000,000
Wow... talk about road safety...
I'd like to shake the hand of the person going 300+km/h in traffic

I'd like to know how they catch the guy going 300+ km/h or the 3500 others that have been speeding.
I hope they at least use that money to fix up "some" of the roads...
and statistics like that are kinda misleading... it's easy to lie with statistics.
2 or 3 times the speed limit? gee, that's a lot of drivers doin 200 to 300 km/h on the 400 series..... damn.... I know my car can't do 200.... let alone 300. Who's got all these damn sports cars??
And I bet if there were the same number of cruisers on the roads on regular days, as there are on holidays, that they'd catch the same number of drivers... so yea...
P.S. out of all that "dangerous" behaviour, I wonder how many accidents there actually were? how "dangerous" was it really? Again, they're just using "speeding" and "dangerous" in the same sentence to create fear in drivers..
Support the Police...oops, I mean Troops

Police are pulling over an average 22 vehicles per day since it was first enacted on September 30, 2007. My question is when does the court system become so burdened down that they will start dismissing cases when those accussed have waited excessively and been denied a speedy trial?
Also this month OPP reintroduced aircraft surveilance patrolling of the 400 both day and night (using night vision) after a 27 year absence. The courts gotta start becoming bogged down eventually. Has anyone heard how Ontario courts will respond to this increased volume?

Well, I can't imagine it will be good. I had a court date not too long ago (got off) on March 7th 2008. The ticket was from February 21st, 2007... I got the notice of trial in the mail sometime in September before this law had nabbed it's first victim.
If the wait is/was already 12.5 months (which IMHO is not reasonable amount of time to wait for a trial) I can't imagine the delays coming up. Some of those old timers will likely be dead before they see a court date!

Taking a 203 ticket to court though wont stop the fact that they will seize your car or bike on the spot
3500 charged...how many are convicted?
If there is a low conviction rate, it would signal that the law is flawed, and the police themselves dont understand it.

considering the potential revenue they'll be getting from 203, i'm sure they'll somehow give priority to those tickets first.
So far they seem to have only been pushing the 50 Kmh over section. At least no other charges have made the news. By sticking to this quantifiable section they are able to sustain their conviction rate. I would think that even if they don't convict on 203, they can still do so on the lesser included offence of speeding at greater than 50 Kmh over the limit, which is still 6 points and a hefty fine. A conviction is a conviction.
