Nothing is fool proof and no one should buy one without doing alot of research.
RD wont help you with laser , instant on , pacing or VASCAR

I know they are illegal but they sure as heck beat a stunting/racing charge?

True but it sure beats not having one, and when i went to NYstate i was travelling 30miles over the limit when the Laser went off and i hit the brakes so hard that i got back to the speed limit and he was reallly far away, i think i had a good 2-5 seconds till the laser trap.
Laser acquisition can be "delayed" using passive measures or totally avoided using a jammer
Radar cant not be jammed ... at least not by us
Bel Sti cannot be acquired by any RDD only rd out there at the moment
thank u.
have a good day.
Keep in mind that an officer can.... ummmm.... 'relieve' you of a RADAR/LASER detector should he see it. I've seen OPP tear a unit, and all of the attendant cables from dash to rear deck, out of a car.

Yup its a risk and if you're dumb or careless dont go this route
But Bill 203 does change the risk evaluation
i myself had a radar detector that i got from the states a few years back...it saved me from a couple speed traps but when the unit got obsolete i decided the smart thing to do was not to have one...i considered myself lucky...there are fines and seizure of the actual unit itself...
don't quote me but back then when i had researched i read that they are legal in SOME states for the fact that these units would help prevent speeding and served some beneficial safety purpose...Canada on the other hand treats these radars as an excuse to speed n thus disregarding traffc laws n such..

First fine is about $170 its the loss of the equipment that hurts.
Getting it torn out of a car is obviously back in the day when all RDs could be picked up by the Spectre. There's no need for elaborate installs anymore.
i got mine taken out of my car, but the officer was a really nice guy. He actually helped me carefully pull out the power cable from the side of dash
I got a 170 ticket which was reduced to $60 in court.
in the end, it was worth it. I paid 100 for the detector, 60 for the fine. it saved me 4 times.
nontheless the work hear in toronto. the US is moving to laser, but since we have the no detector law, the police feel there is no reason for them to move to lasers
