Steering dampner on the bike. ??
|
hey, im currently looking at a 2000 gixxer 600, when i took it for a test ride, everytime i would turn, the bike will fight... like the steering would get so hard to turn... like when im leaning and little turning the steering, the bike is pushing the steering even more....
WHY????
and btw this is not the first bike that does that, i riden other ones that do the same

that's usually a sign of under inflated front tire. I've had it on many bikes I've test ridden. I have no idea, how owners can let it go to that extent....maybe they get used to it as it gradually looses air.
it doesnt have a steering damper
the rear tire is 180
tire pressure??? sound resonable to me! btw any idea how much the tire pressure should be on a 2000 gixxer 600????

If it's low tire pressure you'll be able to feel the drag when just sitting on the bike and turning the bars from side to side.
I would suppose if u are moving from a small bike to a heavy bike?

ive seen that its suppoust to be 34-36... but u have a gixxer so you should know better
nope the tires are in good shape
what you mean by i will feel the drag? explain "drag" lol
my 1995 ex500r weights about 400 pounds and the 2000 gsxr 600 weights 443 pounds

handle bars are lower on supersport
front would feel heavier in turning than on an ex500.
By drag I mean when the bike is stationary, and you turn the handle bars left or right you will actually feel the tire drag or making contact with the pavement. The front end will feel stiff and require more effort then normal to turn the bars back and forth because the contact patch will be larger with an under inflated tire. Kind of like the difference you feel between manual and power steering in a car, but not so drastic.
Has anyone mentioned steering head bearings yet? Too tight/loose or shot bearings can cause hard steering too.....
Best thing to do IMO is get the front end un weighted and see if there is hard steering with no load.....
doing wheelies messes up your steering aswell right?

If your comming down hard then it puts alot of stress on the steering head bearings, and if you dont adjust them accordignly then yes it will mess up your steering...
Get the wheel off the ground with not weight on it and wiggle it back and forth, if you feel play then youve got a bearing adjustment issue...I get someone to hold the bike on the kickstand and rear wheel without holding the handle bars, then I wiggle the wheel back and forth...
With the bike on the kickstand, front wheel in the air and the bars centred, the weight of the front end should cause the wheel to turn freely towards the ground. If it's stiff or does'nt turn on it's own to full stop, then the bearing could be pooched or just need a good lube.
You have to remove your tripples. If I remember correctly, the bearings on the top need to be pressed back down with a special tool, but maybe someone else here could suggest a way to improvise. If your gonna go through all the trouble to get at those bearings, you might as well replace them. I think I paid somewhere between $40-$70 for top and bottom.
