Just noticed that my gas tank hisses (08 ninja)...now i've done a little searching around, and found that kawi's are known for it
(read somewhere that most fuel injected bikes do it)
From all I've read, the hissing is usually noticeable after a ride...or if the temperature outside is hot...
(something about heat from the engine expands the gas, building pressure in the tank)
But I haven't ridden the bike this season (broken wrist). I got a pre-season tune up about a month ago, and she's been sitting there ever since.
It was not warm at all today (btw, the bike was not in any sunlight, it was in the garage all day)
I came home after work, and went over to the bike to see how she was doing...and that's when I heard a very low hiss coming from the gas cap.
I opened and closed the gas cap...and the hissing went away...but, it came back a few moments later.
After a second time of opening and closing the cap, the hissing stopped.
Anybody, have any insight on this "non-ridden, cold temperature gas tank hissing" ?

It's pretty much normal for the 250 Ninjas, sounds like a whale or dolphin call lol.

My 2009 ninja 250 hisses like no tomorrow. I kinda like it

thanks for the responses...
yeah everything I've read so far says it's 'normal' after a ride or in hot weather....I just didn't find anything about hissing coming from a cold bike that's been parked for so long.
btw it's a zx 6r...and the hiss was very low (had to put my ear right next to the gas cap to really notice)...nothing like a whale or dolphin call.
My 2011 Ninja did it all winter sitting in my garage...there is a Ninja 250 forum that has a fix for it if you wish but it really isn't a big deal.
Edit: Damn sorry I missed the zx 6r part sorry.
my '06 zx6r hisses too, its normal
3rd bike (current) - '06 kawasaki zx-636 blk/gld
2nd bike - '08 kawasaki ninja 250 red
1st bike - '92 kawasaki ex500 blue/white (dead)
Screw what everyone says!
Step 1. Buy a new gas tank.
Step 2. When it hisses, repeat step 1.
Lol. It's normal. Don't worry about it.

if its a kawi and sounds like a bit like a fax machine that's normal ... :P

Not normal, your bike is close to EXPLODING. If you give me $50, I will safely destroy it, in an environmentally friendly way.
When you say hiss, do you mean a 'wheezing' or whistling? Mine makes a faint, high pitched wheezing noise. Found out its normal on the 250.
I read on a forum about drilling some holes somewhere to help vent the air build up and quote: "no more gayest sound in the world!".
but who cares. just pretend it's your bike calling to be ridden
Eat up Martha.
no I wouldn't try to fix it (especially wouldn't want to take a drill to her).... btw, it's a very faint 'whistle'.
just want to clarify... everyone is saying the hissing is normal, but are you guys only referring to the hissing after a ride or in hot temperature only?
or do you guys also mean the hissing is normal, even if the bike has been sitting in the garage for a month?
(warm temperature hissing makes sense, but for my edumacation, could someone please explain why there could be hissing from a bike that's been parked for a month?)
again, thanks for all the replies.
btw, I guess hissing would be appropriate...as a kid, I always wanted Cobra to beat the Joe's.

Normal after a ride, before a ride, idle, sitting in garage.
This is for a Ninja 250 but it should apply to all gas tanks.
