I'd best not recommend anything for fear of upsetting the King of Kingston so I'll tell you what I use.

I use this ^^^^, a PZ Racing lap timer. It's a GPS based system so doesn't need a beacon. It's relatively easy to use, although setting start/finish points can be fiddly. It offers 2 intermediates as well. And it memorises 6 (I think) tracks as well. It was just about the cheapest GPS timer I could find. I'm happy with it. I'd love a high end Starlane but can't justify the money.

Bluestreak is selling a clip kit for $12, and you can also buy the wiring + pliers from them if you want. All are comparable to prices I've found elsewhere. I bought a pound of lockwire, it's lasted me four years so far and it looks like I've hardly used it.
