    Cool My GS500 "Streetfighter/Bobber" Build "Becky-Lynne"

Picked this bike up last November from a seller on Kijiji. This is my first bike. I've always liked the look of naked bikes over faired bikes. Wanted to start small so that my insurance premiums would remain low...also, I don't think I'd want to learn on a bike with 600cc + type power.

The bike as I bought it:

The Goal is to have her looking similar to this...

The bike after I started wrenching on it:

Took out the engine and all wiring while the weather was still warm. Then brought it inside to start the winter modifications.

    This is the bike indoors:

Picked this up on ebay for $350 US. 04/05 GSXR 600/750 Front End.

Came with everything I needed on the front end (except upper triple)...tire isn't good for the road, but will make a good track tire if anyone is interested in it. Michelin Pilot __? I believe.

Sent the triples out to a guy to get a spacer made and the GS stem pressed into the GSXR lower triple.

More pics to come...I've got limited funds at the moment, due to other more pressing obligations but I will update this thread as the project progresses.

BTW, if anyone in the GTA area can recommend a good machinist or welder let me know.

    Thanks

    -Shane

Oops, forgot to mention my plans for the bike.

    Kinda in this order:
-Cut the subframe shorter; remove lower bracing and re-weld diagonal canti-lever beams.
    -Scruff frame/prime/paint black
-Fit the front seat of a Hyosung gt250 onto the frame.
-Fit a bandit 400 hugger onto the swingarm (in the mail)
-Fit a 07 R6 rear shock (in the mail)
-Fit wider 160/60/17 tires onto a '03 GSX600 wheel fit it to the swingarm (have the wheel, need the tires)
    -Find a chin spoiler somewhere...
-New Speedo.....no clue as of yet Acewell/Koso
-New light assembly(all around).....no clue as of yet
-Paint all plastics and Tank White...
-Find a gold MX Handlebar and bar-risers to match
    -K&N Filter
-Clean and Re-Jet Carbs (no clue what-so-ever how to do this)
-Odds and Ends - pegs, longer front brake lines, grips,

sweeeeet. love the list of mods you got planned. I really want to do the R1 tail, but don't have any fabrication experience

my bike is going through something similar... http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=58502.0

I hate this list...I didn't think it would be so long before I bought the bike, but then I got to searching and kept seeing more and more things I wanted to do....ah well. Such it life.

AS for the R1 tail, I don't think it would be so hard...however, if I had your style tail, I'd leave it as is. Maybe modify shorten the tail by cutting off a few inches and do some "plastic welding", bondo etc to make it look factory.

When the time comes, I'm going to come to you for some info on the carbs...I plan on running a K&N box filter and a new exhaust setup

that'll happen. When I got mine, the list was pretty long as well, but I'm nearing the end now, so there is hope for you. I got my new carb jets heading my way in the mail, I got a Jardine RT-1 full system and a K&N lunchbox ready and waiting to be put on the bike.

I think the only performance-related mod that I really want to do still is iridium spark plugs, I'll probably order those soon and get them installed at the same time that I do my exhaust/rejet. Maybe sometime down the road I'll get a Katana 160 rear tire and shock

But yea.. it'll be my first time heading into the carbs.. so it'll be a big learning experience. I read through GStwins and the gstwins.wiki and all the info pointed to 20/65/145 jets for a full exhaust system and K&N lunchbox, so that's what I ordered, we'll see how it goes.

Give me a shout if you have any questions, or whenever you're ready to rejet and we'll get it done

EDIT: ****! I just noticed you have a GSX-R front end (was lookin at the thread on my phone earlier, must've missed it)... now I'm stupid jealous. I have to add that to my list of mods now... thanks for that. I'll send you the bill

    Re: My GS500 "Streetfighter/Bobber" Build "Becky-Lynne"

Made some progress over the last few days....finally picked up some parts I had waiting for me in Niagara Falls...

So I got to cutting after I picked up some power tools this weekend....As you can see, the Hyosung 250 seat that I bought didn't quite wrap around the tank so I had to remove some material. Still not a good fit, but I will figure it out when I get there.

You can also notice the new rear shock from a Yamaha 07 R6 (not R6s as I read elsewhere)....perfect fit(does apparently raise the tail end about 2")...if you do this mod, make sure that you get the metal bushing from the original linkage as they slide right into the GS500 linkage.

I might cut off the remaining metal from the lower subframe...I still don't know what I'll be doing with it yet...I'm thinking I want the lower subframe to "round" upwards, starting from the main frame and welded right below where the back of the new upper subframe is.

I'm pretty happy with the angle of the seat...I'm going to mock up a subframe out of 3/4" wood and see how it is before I get it to a welder.

    More to come soon....

    Re: My GS500 "Streetfighter/Bobber" Build "Becky-Lynne"

quick update....partially mounted the handlebar risers. If you look closely in the pic, you will see a huge gap between the riser and triple. The riser was meant for a special triple and came with special bolts. I need to somehow find a M12 x 1.25 x 30 to 35mm hex socket bolt.

I also threw on the MX handlebar to get a feel of the layout...it's a little wide, might cut it down an inch or so.

Did a little work to the seat, I designed the upper part of the subframe using 3/4" wood strips, just need to have them welded now.

If anyone can recommend me a welder, I'd be grateful.

    Thanks

Also, just ordered my headlight....it's a MT-03 replica from Germany

    brackets will be anodized black.

Next purchases will be a set of tires - 120/70 upfront and 150/60 in back....160/60 if they are a slimmer fit and a KOSO gauge

    Looks great man...
Silly question, why didn't you powder coat the frame?
It would look dope as **** if it was black.

Yea, I plan on painting/coating (if money permits) it all black after I weld the subframe and position all necessary holes...don't want to get it scratched up before she's ridden...

still far as hell to go...and I haven't even taken my m1 yet...
