Scorpion EXO-400. Both DOT and SNELL. Last year's graphics can be had for under $100 online. I've got two, one for me and one for my passenger (usually the wife). I seriously can't find a reasonable justification why anyone would spend more for a helmet. Check out this review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bf4Qof1-8s0

As mentioned previously, any DOT/SNELL helmet should do the job--modern manufacturing levels the playing field quite a bit. Helmet price is almost a political subject, so get something that looks good and fits good. In many cases you'll be wearing it for hours and "hotspots" are incredibly distracting.

Wind turbulence causes progressive hearing damage, so get comfortable earplugs too. It becomes incredibly (jet engine) loud and causes fatigue. While stopped, I can converse normally with my FF helmet on and plugs in. I've NEVER had a problem noticing sirens, screeching tires, engines or other road noises. I don't have special hearing either; illness, surgery and age have weakened it noticeably over time.

Check out the Scorpion EXO 400 line-up. Really solid build quality for that price range.

I have an HJC IS16 that I really like. It's comfortable and makes a great commuting helmet with its internal drop down sun visor.

Either way, be sure to try on as many helmets that you can. High price doesn't always ensure comfort or fit.

For example, I tried on two different Suomy helmets and they were brutally painful. They're really nice helmets but just not made for the shape of my head.

Ended up getting a Scorpion EXO 400 Skull Bucket.. Spent a little more than I expected to, but after trying on 20+ helmets, the Scorpion just felt perfect. Very comfortable, light, and reviews tell me it has good ventilation.

    Was on sale for $147,
Last years models were going for $104.

It's on back order, expected to be here by Feb 1

I've got a Scorpion Ex-700 paid $120. Great fit very comfortable. Shape of your head is important in choosing a helmet. Webbikeworld has good reviews of helmets and other equipment and categorizes helmets by head shape.

Shark RSR2 on sale can be found for that price. Kinda noisy but flows a lot of air. Unfortunately this also means it will flow bugs and dirt into your helmet. Shark RSX is almost as good but more street friendly (IMO since it flows less dirt and bugs for normal [non track] use) but they are also rarer in my experience.
