Just bought a DL1000. Where to go?

I do understand that this bike is NOT a true dual sport. I want to put that disclaimer out there first. But, I've always been a sportbike owner and I am looking for a 1-2 day ride that will take me somewhere my sportbike couldn't. I want to take advantage of my new (well used, but new for me) ride.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I've heard some good things about Manatulin Island?

try old nipissing road and lots of the gravel backroads in the muskoka's, ranger lake road out near Sault Ste Marie is nice but far away. Lot's of good fire roads and backroads north of Kingston area - check ADV for more info

Are you looking specifically to try some dirt or are you just looking to do some miles in relative comfort? Really, the sportbike can go, pretty much, anywhere the Strom would. The big thing with the Strom is the mile-munching comfort....just ask me about my Geezer-Glider...aka, the Super Strom.

It's not really a dual sport, just try it in mud or wet grass and you'll understand. There are some great gravel roads north of pickering towards Goodwood if you're day tripping. Practice stopping, and unless you have abs brakes, you'll want to use as little front brake as possible on loose surface.

The Strom shines on gravel roads - try Uxbridge conc 6 & 7 - go n on westney to where it goes to gravel, at the first T go left, then 1st right, go all the way to Goodwood road go right to con 6, go s past Durham forest, go down to left onto road going past the artesian well on lakeridge go across lake ridge onto chalk lake road go east and then left and left past Winona winery etc. etc. My dl1000 is perfect for the gravel, and maybe double track, but sand or mud forget it, get something 200lb lighter.

I was just on the roads south of Algonquin park around Kennisis Lake and they were lots of fun on the Strom. Here's a thread with the route and some info for more details.

Another road I want to check out that intersects Old Nipissing Road is Orange Valley Road, which leads to Broadbent and back to the 518 near Orville. Looks like fun times.

The V-Strom is a Very good touring bike.

I'd make sure you have some suitable tires before venturing off pavement. Tourance, TKC80, Karoo, etc. Otherwise, the V-Strom is only as capable on gravel and dirt roads as any other street bike (Bonneville, Sportster, etc). In slippery stuff like like wet grass or mud, fuggedaboutit.

I'd stay off pavement with such a machine, that's for sure. Probably not something you want to hear.
