Anyone ridden down to South America via Panama City? There are no highways into Colombia so ride to Panama and put your bike on a boat?

I have a SIL down there and the understanding is that the northern end of Panama (Adjoining Costa Rica) is OK except for a bit of petty theft. The southern bit adjoining Columbia (Darien) is hostile and travel is not recommended unless escorted by people with lots of guns.
