Someone is going to die running and HTA172 will be modified or repealed when the question is asked "why did that 40 year old father of two with no criminal history run from the police?"

Running from the police will never be used as an argument to repeal any law. If the "father of two" indeed dies, the question will be "why did the father of two turn criminal" and it will be left without an answer, but it may be used to enact further laws that will "protect us from the ones we once thought to be mature and responsible".

ie. A certain Tim Mulcahy abdicating his personal responsibility and culpability as a father, for raising an irresponsible son - in effect empowering his son with a sporty Audi, in which he killed himself and 2 others in the vehicle during an alcohol fueled romp through Muskoka, into a rock-cut wall. Pappa empowering his son with the vehicle, despite the fact that the kid had already had several recent HTA run-ins previously in his short driving record. Rather than Pappa taking the keys away at the very obvious warning signs of bad road behavior, the kid ran fatally amuck.

Pappa's guilt response? The bar employees that served his kid were sued, and everything and everyone else is somehow to blame for his kids piss-poor decision making skills. Deflection of guilt and blame, was the game for poor Pappa. The general public then gets to pay with new legislation, when he got the attention of several soap-boxing Politico's.. the rest is history.

The grieving father successfully bent the ear of several influential Politico's in order to come up with a legislative proposal, bringing about the legislation behind HTA172 in the first place.

A kid with questionable decision making skills offing himself and 2 buddies in spectacular fashion, brought HTA172 down upon us in no small measure.

It could all have been avoided (maybe) if Pappa had taken some time out of his very busy day, in order to administer a well deserved paternal swift-kick to his ****** son's posterior, prior to the fatal incident.

The ultimate OMFG save the children/think of the children! useless legislation. To date so far, anyway.

Any HTA172 related tragedy is likely to just result in further 'blow-back' legislation to tighten up any perceived weakness in the draconian law... not ease off.

I don't agree with all your posts, Bill, but you sure did hit nails on heads here.

Perhaps he feels he can more easily grieve his son, by shirking the true responsibility upon the rest of us. Again, ignorance is bliss applies. And the world is FULL of people just like Pappa, only they don't all have Audis for their children to drive. Money, in the wrong hands can be truly damaging.

Actually it was the "no alcohol for drivers 21 and under" legislation, not HTA 172, but I'm with you on the concepts involved.

May 24 weekend there was a CBR1000 into the back of an SUV. When it came across CP24 the first time the reporter stated "the result of a high speed OPP chase." The rider had bailed onto the HWY and obviously didn't make it. The subsequent reporting of the story left out any reference to "the high speed OPP chase."
