    Swapping an engine? Ex500 in a 250

Just starting my research on this

How difficult would swapping this be?

Are there any specific aftermarket parts that I would need?

Do I need to swap out my ecu also?

Recommended torque settings for the bolts?

Anyone try this on an 08 (third gen) 250?

I've seen a couple videos on YouTube but no diy's on this swap

I'm pretty good with hand tools. the most challenging thing I've ever done was swap my suspension and brake setup on my old 99 civic

Is this going to be a track bike? You cannot get insurance for the street on that bike in Ontario. If you insure it as a 250 and the insurance company finds out after a claim that you re-engined it, they won't pay the claim. You may as well just not have insurance and save your money.

Talk to Ken (kneedragger8 as he knows both of those bikes better than almost anyone around hear. He would quickly be able to tell you if it was possible.

    Good luck.

It's been done. I can almost guarantee that you neither have the funds nor the skill to get this done.

pretty basic swap all you need is an ex500 frame...seriously why waste money on a minimal gain your making a slow bike slow. now if you want to fit a zx10r motor in the 250...

    If you are actually serious...

This should get you by with just about all of your fasteners.

The torque settings on the bolts are the least of your worries.

That none of the engine mount locations on the 500 engine line up with those on the 250 frame, and the exhaust and intake systems don't match up, and the electronics and wiring and ECU are different, and that I have no idea whether the taller and wider 500 engine will even fit between the 250's frame rails, might just possibly be slightly greater concerns.

You can make anything fit anything else, with enough cutting torches, heavy machine tools, welding equipment, and design and fabrication capability. Or you can just sell the whole 250cc bike and buy a whole 500cc bike and be done with it, and have something you can actually insure, and which will work with OEM-level reliability.

i like challenges TBH i dont plan on selling my 250 but i wanted to make it stunt ready and learn the mechanics of how motorcycles work by taking my 250 apart

but im a pretty broke guy. if it'll cost me more than 3000 i wouldnt bother with it

i'll do a little more research but this thread is merely a pipe dream for now

why not buy a sprocket kit and a cage if you want to stunt it. if people can manage to enjoy a 50cc pit bike you should have no problem with your 250.

there's a fantastic thread going on at ex-500.com now where a guy is doing just that. Granted, he's done more than just swap the engine, but it looks just amazing and in many ways far more appealing than the 400 kawi introduced.
