Do you need to run your bike before changing the oil?
i always thought it makes sense to change oil with engine warm in order have most oil drain out while in its least viscous state. imo.

uhhhh? what makes you say that?
The hotter the better.
There is a thread further down the tech forum... these are good questions.
Re: r1 chained oil, looks dirty
Did you warm the oil up first?
Did you change the oil filter?
Did you let the oil drain while the bike was on it's kickstand?

It doesn't hurt either way. You'll be waiting less time with hotter oil.
furthermore, when you run your bike before hand, it also has the effect of lifting the sediments and mixing in with the oil being drained, and thus removing more gunk.
