heavy and expensive

Hey everyone,
I have a few questions about the Yamaha WR250R... I ride a Ninja 250r right now but i live out in the country and there is a lot of times i wish i could venture off into the trails or concur the dirt roads a little better (i have taken the ninja on dirt roads but its not the most ideal) However, i also like to just hop on the bike and go out for random 100-400+ km rides
How capable would the WR250R be for that type of riding? Can it comfortably go at 100kms an hour for a few hundred kms? (occasionally i ride up to my hometown New Liskeard (2 hours north of North Bay and i want to know if i can still ride up there if i had the WR250R) I have seen a few videos on youtube where it is going like 90 mph (top speed) so it seems like it should be able to but i would like a little clarification as i am new at looking at the dual sport/dirt bike thing, They Styling of the WR250R is SWEET
Also, my guess is that this bike would be cheaper to insure than my Ninja??
heavy and expensive
It's lighter than the KLR by 100lbs, and has a wee bit less horsepower, but offroad with a competent rider there is no way I'd be able to keep up to this bike.year: 2010
price: $6,390
Curb Weight: 298 lbs.
Displacement: 250 Cc
Energy: Fuel injection
Top Speed: 95 mph
post your top speed
Transmission: Constant-mesh 6-speed; multiplate wet clutch
Engine: liquid-cooled DOHC 4-stroke;4 valves
Torque @ RPM: 23.7 Nm @ 8,000 rpm
Horse Power @ RPM: 30.7 hp @ 10,000 rpm
Top speed is listed as 152 kph, and that's about where the KLR tops out as well, so I'd guess that at 100kph you'd have plenty of throttle to pass transport trucks and the like.
Have a look at some of the other offerings for dual sports in the 200 - 250cc range, then call a few brokers and get quotes. Toss in a Suzuki DRZ 400 into that mix of bikes to quote and see if they surprise you with a manageable rate.
A three hundred pound bike on the road is going to feel light and flickable. Offroad is a different story if you choose the wrong tires.
Besides, they're way more fun to ride than a street only bike. Just ride one curvy gravel road and see if you agree.
You can always mod the seat for more comfortable riding.

Right on thanks for the info... It is mostly just a thought for now but I might have to really consider it if I can find the right deal... I think it would really suit my riding style.
Take a look at this thread over on ADVRider probably more info that you will ever need from ppl that are always taking the WR out on longer rides/trips

The best 250cc bike availabale as far as I am concerned.
Your talk about CR's etc is a non issue and waste of bandwidth. The OP is talking about being able to "venture off" the roads where he rides with his current Ninja 250.....and also says gravel roads. Any of that requires road legality.

The engine is top notch on this bike, EFI as well. Whether the bike is suited for your type of riding? Only you can tell. The seat is narrow and hard, it will not matter if you do trail riding, but you will definitely not like going 100km/h for hours ..... not the bike's forte. If you spent a lot more time on hard surface you might want to look at WR250X with more off-road suited tires ....
OK....I will re-phrase..best 250 cc "Road Legal" bike available

after you do suspension work on MX (crf250r) bike, it will smoke the trail (CRF250x) bike on single track
are you going to miss the side stand, or tail light?
as expansion tank, just zip tie the plastic bottle behind radiator
but it just the personal preference, never could enjoy the jumps with CRFx or XRs, but CR
It's not his thread, but the OP made it clear that the bike needs to be street legal which kind of limits his choices, doesn't it? Not everybody has or is willing to buy a trailer ...
thanks for the help everyone... i ended up checking out the suzuki dr-z400s and i think that would best suit my needs, so i went and got a quote on one and they want another 1100 a year!! I guess i will be sticking with my Ninja 250r for now, for thats ok i love this bike too, thats why i bought it... i just think it would be cool to get out in the trails
