    Pick up or deliever bike?

Hi guys, this seems like a dumb question..i have my m2 and have only been on a bike for 2 days for the m1 exit course. I bought a 2010 gsx650f and i dont know if i should pick it up or tell the people at the dealership to deliever it to me.
I'v read some stuff on the forums that the tires maybe slipperly when brand new, tough to ride for a noob and also i'v read that its good to pick it up so you have a feel for the bike.
can you guys give me some advice and tips?

Have it delivered. U have all the time in the world to ride it and make ur memories, rushing home from the dealership would be inadvisable. It takes time to get used to a bike, and I don't think you will want to spend time in their parking lot getting acquainted with the bike.

    Enjoy ur new friend

is the delivery free of charge? if not, ride it home and enjoy the wind and bugs hitting your helmet

personally, i would have it delivered...most dealerships offer that as part of their customer service...i too am a newbie and am glad i had mine delivered...i've been able to go out after work for a while every night thus increasing my confidence and didn't have to feel too overwhelmed riding it home on busy streets with tons of traffic on the first day...

If the dealership isn't far from where you live, I would ride it. The slickness on the tire they are talking about is something you're going to have to wear off anyways, besides you're fine as long as you don't ride hard, which with the amount of experience you mentioned you have, it doesn't seem like you will on your first day.
I recently changed my own rear tire and I know what you're referring to, I simply rode nice and easy through town making lots of turns to help wear it off.

If the dealership is far, or you have to use the highway and you're not ready for that, go ahead and have it delivered so that you don't ride stressed out. Only go on the highway when YOU are ready to give it a try.

I have picked up the baby myself.
I just turned first right into an empty street and practiced a bit 1-2 gear, braking, down shifting, U turn, looked well where the controls are to see if i can reach everything without issues, parked the bike to get used to the weight..and then.....take it slowly and enjoy the ride. It is all worth it.
Dont pick up in rush our. I did mine at 1:00PM.

I've yet to drive a bike home from the dealer. It's so much easier to adjust everything in my driveway and then take it out on familiar streets to check it out and practice. If you are going to ride it home have someone experienced on a bike or in a cage, come and follow you, to keep people off of your tail and scrape you off the pavement if you need help. Make sure that you check the bike over thoroughly before taking it out from the dealers - they have been known to mess up and it isn't pleasant finding out as you're driving off the lot.

If it were me and I only had 2 days experience in a parking lot, I'd definitely have the bike delivered. There's no way I'd had been comfortable enough to ride that kind of distance so early in the game. Find out how much they'd charge you (if anything).

I had mine picked up by Riders Choice and had them check it over.

I was in the same portion as you OP. I just got the bike delivered. I practised on local streets in my neighbourhood before I felt comfortable enough to take it out on the main streets with all the traffic. I paid to have it delivered ($100 cash - Motolimo). It was worth it. The bike was delivered within one hour of me paying for it at the dealer.

For me it just wasn't worth the stress when you are just learning how to ride. When I purchase my next bike, I will most likely ride it home this time since I now have some riding experience.

I should have added i bought the bike from SON.
Hence having RC pick it up and check all was OK, for my own peace of mind and my own safety.

they qouted me in the range of $130-140 to deliver the bike...i dont mind a few dollars extra to pay for my saftey, so i might just have it delivered.

I was in the same position a couple of years ago, did my course on the weekend, picked up the Vulcan on the Monday. Had to ride from Newmarket to Brampton. Good confidence booster for a new rider. Just pick a day carefully weather wise and you will be fine.

Re: Pick up or deliever bike?

^^^ agreed with the boost of confidence. I'm a new rider also, rode my 250 home and felt fantastic. I had a buddy blocking for me with my car, followed me all the way home.

I planned my route carefully before the pickup. I avoided highways and tried to pick limit the amount of left turns involved.

Was I nervous before the pick up? yes.
Was I confident with my basic riding skills (no stalling, clutch & throttle control) that I learned from the course? yes.

Really, the only person that can do the real assessment is yourself. if you feel confident after the course (no stalling, clutch control okay, etc.), I'd say if the weather is nice and you have a friend escorting you, ride it home. you'll feel so good afterwards.

I also understand it's a bigger bike you are getting than the ones from the course. If you have the slightest doubt, have the bike delivered.
