    Ontario Motorcycle Plate Size

Can someone do me a favour..

I am not near my bike and I need the dimensions of the Ontario plate

A guy on another forum makes side mount plate holders, and I need to know the size and the hole position on the plates, as I believe Ontario plates are different than most US states

    BUSTED!!

Unlike car plates, which have long been standardized to the 6 x 12 inch rectangular size (with the exception of the NWT bear), the motorcycle plates even today have no such standardization, and therefore, still come in a variety of sizes as seen here. Some of the provinces such as PEI and Manitoba have used smaller versions of the colorful designs from their car plates. Others such as Nova Scotia and Ontario have stuck to a simpler design. NWT has miniaturized its version of the Polar Bear plate, creating a very popular motorcycle plate dubbed the "Baby Bear"!

Distance between holes seems to differ more than anything in the USA:

    Measured one. 7 1/8" x 4 1/8", and it's 5 1/4" between holes.

My mistake. They should be the same because it's stupid not to use standard plate blanks and plate mount dimensions in the same North American market.

Just measured off the plate on my bike - 7-1/8 inch long, 4-1/8 inch high, mounting hole centers 5-1/4 inch apart center to center. That's 1/8 inch bigger in length and height than most US plates if that makes any real difference, and the mounting holes are a bit different.

Edit - and the mounting holes on my plate are round (not slotted), hole size just under 1/4 inch in diameter, and are drilled 3/8 inch in from both the top and bottom edges of plate.

5-1/4 inch apart center of hole to center of hole, centered between left and right edges.

    Do the math - (7-1/8 - 5-1/4) / 2 = 15/16 inch

    Simple maths tells us. 7.1/8 - 5.1/4 = [1.7/8] / 2 = 15/16" from the edge.

    Kids these days.

    All frames come 4"X7"
    I just measured mine and it's 182mmX105mm
The bolt holes are 135mm apart (centre of holes)
Holes are about 23mm from edge (left to right)
13mm from the bottom to the centre of the hole

So now that I know the dimensions, what are the legalities of having a side mount plate (vertical) on a bike?

Arguable. Questionable. Grey area. An excuse for a cop to give you a ticket. I wouldn't do it.

Keep in mind that most of those aren't mounted all the way at the rear of the bike and aren't mounted up high. There's a requirement that the license plate not be "obstructed", and if the license plate is mounted (say) at the left of the swingarm, the tire will be blocking it when viewed from the right rear.

I agree 100% with you BUT it's funny how the harley davidson iron 883 has a side mounted plate from the factory.
