Lightbulb Learning Curves - Questions & Answers - 2011 style

    www.LearningCurves.ca

    Rider development

Stuff you should know about Learning Curves rider training.
You may want answers to some of these frequently asked questions about training programs in Ontario for M2 Training - Learning Curves and M training - M2X.

    M2 Training - M1X Basic Course
    What do I get?
You get 3 hours of classroom time and 14 hours on-bike, including testing for your M2 licence on site. You will earn your M2 licence upon completion, and a certificate qualifying you for a significant reduction in the cost of insurance on your motorcycle.

Will I need my own motorcycle?
No you will not need your own bike for this basic training course. Learning Curves will provide the motorcycles for the course. You will however need to supply all your own gear in order to take this course. You will however need to provide your own motorcycle for the full M course and testing.

    What do I need?
You will be asked to bring a motorcycle learner's permit from the Ministry of Transportation DriveTest offices. This temporary licence, the M1, costs $17.50. You require no appointment to write this knowledge test. See our "graduated licensing" section to help prepare for it.

You will also be asked to bring your own protective gear, including a helmet (with a decal indicating DOT approval), leather boots or equivalent that cover the ankle bone, leather gloves or equivalent, and tough jacket and pants.

You will also be asked to sign a waiver acknowledging your adoption of the risks involved in taking a course necessarily involving speed and motorized machinery.

    How does the licensing work?
If you come to the course with the M1 learner's permit, we can administer the riding test that qualifies you for the M2 licence. If you're successful, you're given a certificate that you may deliver to a DriveTest office. Timing is important for insurance reductions and the removal of restrictions that apply to your learner's permit. Ideally, get the M1 two months before your course, and take the M2 certificate to DriveTest soon after your course.

You might want to refer to our licensing section for the details, for DriveTest locations, and for help preparing for the learner's permit.

Where do I find out more about dates, locations, prices?
Check out the locations section for a list of all the Learning Curves training sites for contact numbers and addresses for further information specific to that location. If you contact one of the organizations, only to discover that the date that you wanted is fully booked, ask about other scheduling possibilities.

What should I look for in a motorcycle course?
Expect to have the best experience with instructors who are enthusiastic motorcyclists themselves. Look for a school that promises you the opportunity to ride many different styles and models of motorcycles, that is generous with riding time and test opportunities, that affords you an intimate learning environment with small groups of students and instructors dedicated to your success.

    Who are the students?
The course is suitable for complete beginners of any age, or for individuals wanting some practice of old skills. Women are a rapidly growing segment of the motorcycling population, as are older riders.

Differences in language, hearing, height, speech, and state of health can usually be accommodated. If you can ride a bicycle safely, you can motorcycle safely.

    What's the test like?
The licensing test is based on the exercises done during training. It will be explained in detail in the parking lot. Practice time is always available. The test exercises are simpler than the standard you were held to while practice riding. Simply, the test exercises reward accuracy, rather than speed, and motorcycle handling skills, rather than quick reflexes.

A very high proportion of riders are successful in the test, and even more upon free re-testing, if all that's required is some extra practice time.

    Who are the instructors?
They are certified professionals who coach motorcyclists as a rewarding hobby. Typically the enthusiasm they have for riding reflects their desire to pass on that passion to new riders.

    M Training - M2X Course
    What do I get?
You get three hours of classroom time, six hours of coached riding time, and an hour-long solo evaluation as your M licence test. The practice riding time is done in groups of five or fewer riders, including your instructor.

Will I need my own motorcycle?
Yes, you supply your own motorcycle for this course.

What should I look for in a motorcycle course?
Expect to have the best experience with coaches who are enthusiastic motorcyclists themselves, and who ride with you in traffic. Look for a focussed presentation of traffic management rules, as they apply to instructor and student alike, in or out of a licensing test scenario. Look for riding groups of 4 students or less.

    Who are the students?
The course is suitable, of course, for anyone wishing to earn an M licence. It is also suitable for someone with a motorcycle wanting to refresh traffic instincts, and brush up on rusty skills.

    What's the test like?
The licensing test will be explained in great detail in class. The MTO Motorcyclist's Handbook also describes the test environment.

Simply, the instructor becomes the examiner following you for up to an hour while radioing simple directions. The most basic traffic manoeuvres such as turns, stops, and lane changes reward calm and intelligent traffic-management skills, rather than quick reflexes.

    How much will it cost?
The M1X course regularly retails for $399.00 dollars, and it includes:
    an evening of classroom instruction
one and a half days of practical riding
an afternoon of practice prior to the MTO Motorcycle Operators Skills Test (MOST) ver. 2
the evaluation itself and one retest if it is necessary at a later date.

We also offer members of Gta Motorcycle.com special group rates, please contact the administrators Paul or Cutekill for details and referral. Read through to the end of the post before contacting them.

    Water:
Students will be spending over 14 hours on a parking lot exposed to the weather, wearing heavy protective gear while engaged in what can be strenuous activity. I suggest bringing as much water as you think you'll drink in a day, then doubling that amount and bring it to the course with you. You would not believe how quickly riding will dehydrate the body.

    Sunscreen:
The sun will burn the back of your neck. If you don't want to proudly show off your new tan lines to your co-workers and spend your day listening to Jeff Foxworthy jokes on how you might be a redneck... Bring Sunscreen. Imagine the friends you'll make on the day of the course when they find out you not only brought extra water, but you'll share your sunscreen as well.

Packed in like sardines, you can choose any colour you want as long as it's white.

    Learning Curves - Location Update

    For this coming weekend:

    Welcome !

Thank you for your dedication to safe motorcycling by participating in this event.

We confirm that the Learning Curves rider development and licensing weekend that you requested is scheduled as follows. If this information doesn’t answer all your questions, please let us know.

    March 24, Thursday:

6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., for a classroom session. Bring your driver’s licence and M1 temporary permit. Review the waiver below for further discussion in class. Riding equipment is not necessary tonight, but we welcome it if you have questions or comments about it.

We meet at Day’s Inn at 1684 Queen St. East, east of Coxwell Avenue. If you’re unfamiliar with the Toronto Beaches area east of the Gardiner Expressway, please feel to call for directions by vehicle or streetcar. Free parking is available a few minutes’ walk away at 1141 Eastern Avenue, as on the weekend.

March 26 and 27, Saturday and Sunday:
8:30 am to 4:30 pm for on-site riding. Please bring all necessary gear, including helmet, leather boots and gloves, and sturdy clothing. Extra cold and wet-weather gear is always useful.
    .

Re: Learning Curves - Location Update

Be advised that the official cancellation by us of this Saturday / Sunday sessions (mar 26-27) will wait until Thursday after class. We're telling students to come to class anyway to get that out of the way. I wouldn't be worried about 3-5 cm of snow except that the temperature is not due to climb above zero until sometime on Saturday... slush, with the ground still frozen... great!

Any student of 15 that thinks better of it between now and Saturday is welcome to postpone at no cost. I apologize for the lateness of it all...
I'll have more if the weekend is cancelled regarding rescheduling. Wait out.

Considering the thunderstorm I still got even more red yesterday.

Gotta say though being there even as an instructor I noticed an improvement in my own skills riding home. I think the ones who benefit from this the most is the instructors. We get our skills reviewed every weekend AND we get to see those sneaky smiles form on the faces of the students.

    Streetproofing Dates:

    The dates are as follows:

    April 14
    April 28
    May 12
    May 26

Please email us at info@learningcurves.ca to let us know to expect you on a given date. If we have an overwhelming response, Don brings in more instructors.

This would be at our 1141 Eastern Avenue location.

Appropriate riding gear is necessary to participate. Last year we had to turn away someone who showed up wearing shorts on his motorcycle.

+3 But feel free to ask any course related questions here about appropriate gear for the weather, where the washrooms are located, where to park and all the good stuff.
