Time to remove/replace varies a lot. I can get a CBR125 engine out in 45 minutes and back in in an hour, but that's an engine I can carry with one hand. FZR400 engine takes a couple hours out and a couple hours to put back in, but that's one I can do in my sleep. ZX10R, I don't even want to think about it.

Question: When a shop mechanic takes a job...
EG: Motor swap, 10 hour job quote. And it actually takes 10 hours, doesn't the mechanic not get paid to clean up/ prep for the next job?....you know stuff like
- cleaning up the floor/work benches....
- cleaning up the tools
- putting away extra spare/parts for future use
(or) would it be quoted as a 11 hour job. So work gets done for 10 hours, 1 hour for prep/clean up?

Ive done it both ways, replace the engine with a good used engine or rebuild. When I did my 2001 R6 I was getting quotes of at least $1000-2000 from local shops to rebuild my slipping 2nd gear. I did it myself for roughly $600 in parts and about 2-3 hours once the motor was out of the bike...
Ive also done my 2004 636, but I had a good used transmission out of a blown motor so the only cost was new gaskets and oil. And I know that bike so well I had the the whole job done in 3-4 hours, including dropping then motor and putting it back in and getting it running....
That being said I will always choose a used replacement motor if I can find one for under $800, $600 in parts + my time to rebuild isnt worth it if I can just drop in a good used motor for $600-800....The last motor I bought cost me $700
