Can you identify what is on his tires?

    Kempenfelt Bay in Barrie.

Does anyone know what he's got on his tires?

    Studs and cable ties?

Perhaps you put on cable ties to stop the tire from rolling off? Lower tire pressure?

I'll have to check those links when I get off work.

One guy on advrider thought it might be tire chains held in position with zip ties, but in my experience, the ties would peel off due to torque and flexing in cold temps pretty fast, or so I would have thought.

But more importantly, is that a Hooters in the background?

Looks to be only the front wheel that the lead rider in photo has set up this way, so drive torque and related forces are not too big of an issue, I would only assume.

I have no idea, but am willing to venture a guess. I'm not really an off-roader or ice guy, so please ignore this if its wrong. Seems like he has a second (studded) tire layed on top of a traditional knobby. Since it isn't fastened to the rim like the base knobby tread he used the zipties to hold it in place at various points to prevent it sliding off to the side during corners. Maybe makes changing back to a front knobby quicker, but again, I'm riding blind here.
