I run the engine for a while before doing an oil change. Usually pour about 150ml of seafoam in the oil, run it for 5-10 minutes, then leave it to drain for about 10 minutes. Then I put the oil bolt back on, rotate the bike around, and leave it to drain for another 10 minutes.

I also fill the filter 1/2 way with fresh oil before screwing it back onto the engine (any more than 1/2 and the oil will spill out as I turn it).
Where did you get the NAPA GOLD 1356 for 11 dollars?

imagine your rod bearings being dry for several months......+ cold/heat cycles. that will cause havoc.

The valve train maybe another issue, but there is always going to be a good film of oil around the cam's/valves. By changing your oil, you are replenishing this thin but critical film of oil.

Oil is not only a lubricant, but also a cleaning agent.

I've torn down a motor that's been sitting without oil for a few months, I haven't found ONE bit of rust on the internals.

Oil does an excellent job of coating everything and critical surfaces have an increased amount of oil going to them.

A rusty bearing will be the least of your worries, i'd be more concerned about the critical few seconds after start up, and its not like you will lose your motor if you keep it free of oil over the winter and fill it up and purge it out in the spring. You might do little damage to it, but it can be avoided or reduced by changing your oil now.

just in case it is unreadable, text in the top left coner states: "For motorcycles, drain the engine oil thoroughly. Refill the crankase with engine oil all the way up to the filler hole.

Aside: a tip for scanning 2 sided pages on a flatbed scanner ... lay a piece of something black (paper, tee, whatever) between the page & the lid.

It doesn't happen often - but it sure happened here..
    ...hangs head in shame.
I might have to re-evaluate my online **** disturbing criteria!

Obviously, neither did I - but he did. Points to him for that.

I can certainly admit defeat when defeated...

PeterTrocewicz - my apologies. I got a little ahead of myself here - but you win. - respect for posting those scans.

I called your bluff, but your bluff wasn't a bluff.
Again - points to you and negative points to me for treating you like (user names I won't mention).

Would never get to that... I enjoy a good online debate - cause they usually end in facts.

PeterTrocewicz done did have the facts.

My forecast for early spring - new post in the technical section titled "I followed the manual for some Suzuki bike/ATV, and overfilled my crankcase in my Honda - then I forgot about it and rode around with 5 liters of oil...."

Re: is oil really necessary when winterizing?

Why make something as simple as an oil change so complicated?

    1 - Drain oil.
    2 - Replace filter.
    3 - Reinstall drain plug.
4 - Put new oil in.

You don't need Sea Foam, storage oil, or filling the crankcase to the top if you only plan on putting the bike away for the winter.
