I've never been one to buy cheap helmets! LOL.
In my unscheduled dismount in Allen's at SMP I ground down the shell above the visor near my left eye, broke the visor and all the visor mechanism off the left side of the helmet, and ground down the left rear side of the helmet. No blacky outy!

Damn... I already bought my new full face helmet before I read this post!
Very true.
Some excellent updated info here, regarding the different standards.
http://www.webbikeworld.com/eicma-20...-standards.htm
Of note, the biggest difference between the ECE standard and the Snell/Dot standard is the penetration test required for DOT and Snell. This test does not exist in the ECE standard.
"The penetration test is a drop on to the helmet shell by a cone with a 60-degree angle shape. It comes to a point and the helmet must not allow the point to impact deep enough to touch what would be the rider's head.
This test has also generated some controversy, with some saying the chances of something penetrating a helmet shell are low. But again, it depends on the individual rider's tolerance level for taking the chance."
At the end of the day, it's your head and your money. In my eyes, I'd choose a helmet that meets *several* different standards.
I'd say if a helmet can meet DOT, Snell2010, Sharp (5 star rating) in the US, and ECE and ACU Gold in Europe. Then I'd say you have a pretty good and damn safe helmet.
This is why I chose a Shoei. It meets or exceeds all of the above.

OK...stupid question from the noob. When you say certification do you mean the thing inside the helmet that says 2010 SNELL or is it an actual piece of paper? I've never actually looked at the papers in the plastic cover in the box. lol
Got the Shoei TZ-R ORB TC2 DOT and SNELL approved for $350 at Royal.

It's the label inside the helmet. You may have to pull the liner around to see it, it'll say SNELL M2005 or M2010.

tz-r are snell 2005... the qwest, rf-1100, and x12 are snell 2010...2005 are perfectly fine street helmets, its the racers who need to worry about updating helmets to either snell 2010 or ece 22-05.

This Qwest caught my eye. I might have to try one on at the bike show to see how they fit compared to an RF1000.

Maybe I have the model name wrong. Not at home to check... I am pretty sure it said 2010 on it. I plan on taking a track course in the spring so it is important to me. I'll check and post it later.
