A note on Facebook reminded me of something from that same era (1970's). Real song about a real event, 35 years ago today ...

Try this one on for size. Released 6 years before that and sounds like it could have come out in the '80s.

The Police were the greatest rock trio ever, imho. I went to see them in Seattle back when I was in high school. It was their reggae influence in alot of their earlier music that got me into them. Nothing today compares with their classic sounds.
Stewart Copeland was the band founder. Andy Summers was already in another band and was lured to join them. Actually, they had to fight for the name "the Police" as there was another rock group called the Police at the time. Sting (Gordon Sumner) did the main vocals, and did keyboards and bass. STing was a school teacher before he became a musician and the song "Don't Stand So Close to Me" was a song about high school girls coming on to him at the time (or the fear of that, and the reprocussions of his job from that). He got the name Sting from wearing a bee yellow and black jacket all the time. Sting did some acting as well, such as a low budget nondescript movie called Brimstone and Treacle. I watched it but it didn't make much sense at all. Kind of a dark movie. His most popular role was probably that in Dune.
It was Sting that wanted to break free from the trio and actually did some solo work before they officially broke up. Sting was the instigator of the break up, and Steward Copeland never really wanted the band to fall apart. I tried to follow Sting in his solo carreer, but couldn't stomach his pain and heartache jazzy melancholy
People say that their Syncronicity album was their best. The songs had a lot to do with Stings tumultuous relationship with his then wife, like King of Pain, Every Breath You Take, Wrapped Around your Finger.
They had the coolest album names at the time, like Outlandos D'Amour, Zenyatta Mondatta, Regatta de Blanc, and Ghost in the Machine.
This is all from my memory and my fondest memories of growing up with this band. None of this has been pulled from Google; it is accurate from my pre-internet days of following this group.

Great thread. My kid (Englishj - you met him on the ride we did last summer) who's 12 (yeah - I'm old) is into the older stuff like Aerosmith, Rick Derringer, Elton John (his ringtone? - Rocketman); Kiss, Warrant (Cherry Pie), Beatles, Police and so on...and he likes the new stuff too (102.1. 103.5 99.9 when it isn't sappy and so on...). Where did he get exposed to this? Rockband and Guitar Hero. Love it. When we're on a longer trip (going to Huntsville tonight) we like the same stuff so the iPod tracks playing in the car are all good!
Whats a list of music from '78 with out a mention of Rush's Hemispheres?

VN9008CF - Candy Lime Green.
I think they peaked at Moving Pictures. (one of my fave albums of all times). It all just sounded like pap after that to me.
My sisters best friend dated Leifsen for 3 or 4 years. Came to parties at our house and such.
Went to school with Lee's brother. I think Lee went to AY Jacksons HS. We all went to Zion Heights JHS.
I saw them perform at Bayview Arena, the local skating rink, when i was 8 or 9. Pretty sure it was 2112. My first concert. It was free. And was just a bunch of local kids and the bands family. i had NO IDEA who i was watching.
Later, i'd watch them play softball on tuesdays at Zion Heights baseball diamond. about 2 minutes from my house.
Much later, my sisters buddy started a cleaning company, doing residential and commercial stuff in Thornhill. Leifson was one of her clients. One firday night I went with her buddy just to help out. Saw his music room. WOW. Like walking into a shrine.
