    Re: Riding with a dog.

Ok, I can't let a thread about dogs and bikes go without posting a gratuitous shot of my ridin' buddy - Hector The Wonder Dog. He currently has around 13,000km of riding shotgun in the Ural's sidecar, in all weather...

I love the pics of Ronnie's dog with the wind in it's face

That picture of Hector the wonder dog is great!

How does he like being a chair monkey? Does he lean the right way?

He loves it! And he does lean the right way when required, but mostly he just lies down on his blanket once we get above 60kmh. He's blind, btw, which is part of the reason why we call him The Wonder Dog.

    Re: Riding with a dog.

As a dog lover, I thought of taking my Chow with me. I think it is irresponsible. The dog can react and kill the both of you.
It's kind of like my friend who walked around with her dog off lead because she is always good.
Till she saw a cat one day and ran out in front of a truck and got killed (the dog)
Having said all that the pics are pretty cute.
Dogs are predictable are they are are unequally unpredictable. It just takes once.

    Poor guy.

60kph must be the magic number for sensory overload. My previous dog Honey would pull her head back in the cage window at speeds over 60, and Suzi tends to pull back at higher speeds around the same mark, although she's really experimented trying to find different spots that let her smell at higher speeds.

So you too have ridden out the slow way to keep your dog happy and part of the ride?

Suzi Bandit is a female Cocker-Spaniel Poodle mix, and weighs in at around twelve pounds and will be two years old in February.

Riding with dogs is nothing new. Parson Jack Russell bred the Jack Russell terriers to fit in a saddlebag and into the foxes den, so they could accompany the hunt.

I always wondered how dog and motorcycles would work. I imagined it would be with a side car if a bigger dog and would hard to keep the dog from jumping out.

One of the reason he loves riding so much is that I always take him somewhere interesting, be it for a swim in the river, a walk down the dog aisle in a Pet Food store (where I let him sniff out a treat), a run in an empty field, or even a camping trip: Caravan to Chippewa.

Cool Re: Riding with a dog.

Awesome thread! I've been saying for years that I want a side car, so that I can ride with a golden retreiver named buddy. (Still saving for the side car, and waiting to buy a house before getting a dog)

Always thought it would be cool! How do you like the ural btw?

    Re: Riding with a dog.

You are entitled to your opinion, and I respect that. My Ex-wife felt the same way.

I ride a motorcycle because I choose a higher level of risk then some other people, and as the owner of my dog, I have that right to subject her to the same danger and permanent hearing loss.

As long as you respect my right to do it, I'll respect your opinion on the matter.

Post up a picture of your chow.

Not of the dog is properly trained. In my case, not only is Hector well trained, his being blind negates the possibility of a visual distraction. I have many members in my club that take their dogs in the Urals; some use pet restraints (kind of like seatbelts for dogs) and some don't... thing is, ALL of us love our animals and wouldn't dream of allowing them to get hurt.

Well said! I just recently adopted an ex racer greyhound. Most of the greyhound "moms", say it's a bad idea to bring a greyhound to a dog park, the reasoning is that since a greyhound has very thin skin, even a little nip could end up way worse. To me, it's kind of like riding, I know the dangers, but I also know that life is more fun!

    Re: Riding with a dog.

My dogs likes to ride with me, but did'nt have the courage to take them out to the road (will ride circles in townhouse complex only). I have the (outward hound) car seat for them that i strap to my chest that one of my dog likes to ride in. But this cause me back pain. My other dog will balance on the passenger seat.

I used to have friend's dalmatian that likes to ride on the tank of my bike and soak me with drool after 30mins of riding(this was in the old country).
