    Gearing for Quarter mile...

I was just sent an email from a gentleman that was down to the MIRock series recently...My 14 runs a stock gearing of 17\41....there where guys running 37 on the back....I have never heard of that..I realize it plays into the favor of the big torque it has...but down in 4 in the back????Maybe one..I've seen that. I was thinking of going 16\43 or 44 next year.....

    Re: Gearing for Quarter mile...

Noob to drags but not noob to bikes in general and I've seen what the ZX10R riders are using. And I'm cursed with an engineering degree that prompts me to put numbers to everything possible.

My preference has always been, where there is a choice in the matter, to do all the ratio-changing with the rear sprocket and keep the front sprocket the same number of teeth as stock. It puts less stress on the chain, on the transmission output shaft, there's less chain pull for the suspension to deal with and it's less likely that the chain will rub on the swingarm. There is a little more inertia because the chain will have to be a couple links longer (negligible) and is travelling faster relative to the bike, but I think the advantages outweigh the downsides.

I've been told that you want to go through the traps at the top of 5th, I've heard others say to go through at the top of 6th.

If you are at 17/41 and are thinking of 16/44 then I'd suggest 17/47 and a slightly longer chain. What chain are you using? I went with a 525 (stock size) on the ZX10R.

Just going by percentage change from the stock ratio, I think you are in the ballpark unless you want to go through the traps in 6th, which would require a crazy low ratio.

All this is assuming no major power adders. My engine has never been touched (and has 65,000 km on it). If there's turbo or nitrous or supercharging involved, all this goes out the window.
