Thumbs down QUEBEC speeding ticket - Fight or Pay?

had the pleasure of getting a speeding ticket in La belle province...

I find generally from experience and rumour that QC won't generally 'negotiate' when you take it to court... unlike Ontario where I have haggled before.

basically if you are English .. you don't stand a chance.

Should I Just pay up or fight it? Have you had experience successfully fighting a ticket in QC?

You may just choose not to pay it. I did that years ago when I got two tickets within 30 minutes. But, I chose not to go through Quebec until the records cleared.

I don't know if that's viable anymore though, I think they now share their info with Ontario and it may affect your licence when its up for renewal.

information is shared, and as long as you have any unpaid fines you risk a jail term in quebec should you enter the province and get pulled over.

I vote pay it. Not worth the hassle. How much is the fine if you don't mind posting it? My car was towed in Q once. Got it back a couple days later for 900$. Sucked.

fine is only $229 .. not worried about that.. more the affect on insurance if and when they find out..

how much would insurance jump? perfect record, no accident no tickets blah blah blah.. then suddenly this - 4 points

i'm inclined to just pay it though and save the hassle..

I'm not too sure how much it will jump up. The points don't matter to the Insurance co...just the conviction. Now they won't know until it's time to renew your policy. Hopefully you are with a company that may overlook 1, but I highly doubt it. Do you know anyone in Quebec? There maybe people on the board from out that way and could shed some light on how to fight it. Maybe go back up there and try your hardest to get it reduced or thrown out. Tell them you'll donate 500$ to a charity of their choice...worked in the GTA for me. Good luck!

Re: QUEBEC speeding ticket - Fight or Pay?

    I say Fight
    NOW..
Personal experince to share here with Q speeding ticket..
So I was going "fast" in Q and the cop came from opposite side from nowwhere and flashed light (I dont think He was doing a speed check ) which I didnt excatly notice given the curve in roadways , now given my "some speed" kept going and had out ran the cop thorugh the curves etal...but a small town came next and had to slow down to pass through the town. Next thing.. I notice 2 -3 crusiers oppsite side coming flashing towards me and surround me ..
Had a **** in pants moment...
I asked, whats matter and used language as leverage and said that dont understand french and their english was broken ..after making them all repeat 6 - 7 times to explain they wanted me to take to station .I being innocent they bulied me to station to hand over a speeding ticket .
Quiet ****** since they arbitarily made a speeding ticket
    I decided to fight .
2 years passed by didnt hear anything
so you can use this peroid to find a lawyer which I didnt do
3rd yr ticket fine shows up and I decided whats the use of the lawyer the ticket is its 3rd year and would go away so asked for extention of court date and now full 3yrs had passed and I thought I can pay the fine and the ticket might will on insurance ..
but to my stupidity they convicted me on the later court date and now I am paying about +100/ year on insurance
and YES the do share ticket database which Ontario which showed up on ontario even later ... now in pain of paying higher insurance

If you decide Fight it and DO get a lawyer....

^^ that was painful to read. So what your trying to say is get a lawyer? Wonder why it took them 3 years to convict you? I think if you don't show up on your first appearance your deemed guilty as charged. Maybe it just takes that long for all the paperwork to reach Ontario. I definitely would not let it go 2 years. or 3 for that matter.

Also, the impact on your insurance and record is from the date of conviction, not the date of the charge. Hmm, on re-reading maybe that was what Jbike was trying to say?

I'm currently fighting a ticket in Montreal. It's before the courts.

Major headaches because Quebec is a Frnch only province.

It's been more than 2 years since the offence date.

I'm still waiting for the trial date.
