    Looking at a SV650s

So I am looking at a 2001 SV650S on Thursday and was wondering if there is anything specific I should be looking for in this particular year and model. Here is the info on the bike I have recieved from the lady.

-Bike was bought 3 years ago from a dealer in Guelph
-She is the third owner (has the UVIP)
    -Listed with 26000km
    -Replaced fork seals last year
-For safety it needs new back tire and brake lever
-Mechanic told her no more then $300 to safety including labour
    -Price: $3400
-Reason for selling is that she is saving for a wedding

    Thanks.

No idea on problems with the SV's, but price is kinda high. I know of at least one 03 or 04 for sale now for 3000.

SV's can be had pretty cheap, even for the Gen 2 (2003+, has EFI).

For specific issues with them I'd say hit up the SV forums and ask there. Those guys are a wealth of bike specific knowledge. www.svrider.com

Overall the SV's are a pretty solid bike. At least better be as I'll soon have one (2004 Gen 2) sitting in my garage in the next week as well. And for comparisons sake the 2004 I'm getting will cost me about $3500, and its got all the track mods, bout 20K kms on it.

SV's are great bikes. I had 4 in my garage and just sold one. I would offer 3000 cash as is and do the safety yourself. I dont know what the condition is or how its mechanically but seems ok from what i have read.

Has the Valve Service been done?

    Service Records?

Price is a tad high, but depends on the condition

Bought 2001 model last year, with Yoshi and lower fairings. Couple of small scrapes, 28K. Needed nothing for safety.
    $2,800.
    Just for reference.

As for the bike. I've put 20K on it since last year, running strong. The only parts that needed changing were the usual wear & tear things - Chain, sprockets, tires, spark plugs.

Stock seat sucks for long rides on these bikes, I got a used Sargent - much much better.

BTW, you can get the rear tire for about $150 and brake lever for no more than $40. Tire install $30-40 and the lever, put it on yourself.

The front suspension is quite soft as well. Aside from that, overall build quality and reliability is excellent at least for my 2nd gen. Can't beat the sound of a V-twin..

Only sounds great with an aftermarket exhaust......otherwise it sounds like a lawnmower.

I'd consider offering $3500 (if you have it) for this one with low miles.

At 35k km's you'd need to get the valve clearances done. If the forks are all stock you may want to put a few hundo into them to get them sorted out.

The red one is nice, but expensive for the k's on it.

the 2002 year model was the pinnacle of the first gen, and all the bugs were sorted out. 2003 was the begingin of the 2gen, and had quite a few things to sort out.

I have a 2002, and a free brake lever if you want it.

Luck. The SV is a great bike.

Thanks for the info peeps. I will ask her some more questions tomorrow.

How much does it cost to get the valve clearances done?

I have seen that other one, but how do you guys deal with buying bikes far away? Like transporting it and everything. Just strap it down in a pick-up truck?

Valve clearance depends on the shop you call. I'd suggest calling around to whatever shop you want to do the work for you.

As for picking up a bike and bringing it home, back of a truck or a trailer works. Just strap it down, and drive home.

I will suggest for strapping a bike down, spend the $30 or so and pick up a Canyon Dancer bar harness (or some other brand of harness). Makes strapping down the front end so much nicer.

Now I just gotta find someone that has a pick-up truck. Surprisingly none of my friends drive pick-ups.

I guess thats the main reason I am looking locally for a bike. There are alot of deals which are further away, but I'll just have trouble transporting it. Unless I rent a U-Haul or something.

That would be your best alternative, especially if its worth the rental and drive time.

Pretty sure U-haul rents trailers pretty cheap, cant remember how much but know a few guys that come to the track that do it that way.

Pretty sure a TRAILER is flat rate, or I'd really like to know how they track the # of km's you drive with it.

You can put in into a mini van as well, You just need 2-3 people to lift it in.
