    Picking up a DS tonight!

I have been thinking about getting a ds or sm bike ever since I took the MSC course on thier dirt bike. I even made some threads about this before.

Last night I saw a 2000 DRZ400s and I made an offer for it which the buyer accepted. Tonigth the bike will be mine.

I wasnt sure before if I wanted the SM or the S, but for the price I am going to grab the S.

Looking forward to riding some beginner trails in the near future.

I am 5'9 and the bike is DAMN tall.

I am picking it up either way. Rain or shine!

My previous bike has been gone for 2 weeks and I am sick of the ttc.

Just brought it home. What a fun ride. Everything is great with the bike except that half way home on hwy7 the speedo cut out on me. It displays the time and all the functions but it stays at zero and the milage does not move...

    What do I do ?

Speaking from a Kawasaki KLR standpoint there are three things I'd look at:

Hub attached to the axle, a plate has to be meshed with the rim or the speedo will not work.

The speedo cable attachment to the hub at the axle

The speedo cable attachment to the speedometer itself.

Obviously this is specific to my bike, but it might give you a starting point for yours.

I am going to have to take it apart tomorow afterwork. I just went out for a late night spin and damn this thing is fun. The possibiliities are endless.

    Quick question,

The guy who sold it to me told me to use premium fuel because it is a high compression engine. I am not sure what that means and whether or not it makes a difference. On the old bike I used the 87 gas.

    Do thumpers need premium?

Did he have engine work done to it? If so then run with higher octane fuel.

If it's stock, use the fuel the owners manual recommends.

Re: Picking up a DS tonight!

I got all the paper work done, the bike is now LEGIT !!!

All I need to do is fix up the speedo issue, change the front brake pads since they are rusty and make squicking noise (I already ordered new ones from Suzuki), change up the rear left blinker and do the oil.

Hopefully, this weekend I will be able to get out and try some trail riding.

What are some places that are not too far from Vaughan ?

Congrats!!! Now let's see a picture!

Your closest legal trail riding to Vaughan is probably the Simcoe County Forest (SCF) tracts... here are some maps and info for ya:

Be sure to join the OFTR before riding any of these trails - membership is a requirement for SCF.

I run 89 in mine. I find it pings a little on 87 when I get into some more difficult terrain. I run 91 if there is no mid-grade available.

I hope it has a better set of tires on it than the stock Trailwings (deathwings) before you go off road with it.

Their intended purpose was for racing, why don't you guys buy scooters, the handling ability of a vespa is still beyond anything either of you are going to need.

I figured out the problem with the speedo, it is the speedo cable, it has broken inside. Looks like I have to order a new one from suzuki.

It does have the stock tires, what is wrong with them?

I run 91 in my 05 SM as that's what the manual recommends.

FYI - I had a buddy in college whose dad owned a bunch of gas stations. He told me never to buy the mid grade cause it sits there the longest as not many people buy it.

OP - congrats on the purchase. Check out the drz section of thumpertalk.com. It's the best drz resource on the web. A service manual would be a good idea too.

I don't know about the stock tires on the S, however if they're 10 years old it might be a good idea to replace them. How do they look?

They call them "deathwings" for a reason.

They are the Trailwings. They are in pretty good condition actually.

Went to a random parking lot in a park to mess around, I was trying to go over a big curb but I wasnt going fast enought and lost balance. Now both of the rear turn signals are broken . Other then that, the bike seems bullet proof.

I need to invest in some flush mount lights for the rear, and possibly the front so that they will match.

They are an OK street tire but are horrible for off road riding.

The turn signals are the first thing to break when you wipe out off road on these bikes so don't worry about it.

    I stand corrected.

I guess I read the "Other Countries" section where it says 91. For Can/USA is says 87. The measurement difference seems kinda dumb. Why isn't it standardized across the world?
