Different set of road conditions. (Ontario is filled with straight, boring roads with tons of visibility in every direction. Germany has an ample share of winding mountain roads - many with only one lane, many with a big drop-off on each side. In the cities, in europe, often the buildings are built RIGHT to the edge of the road - no visibility around them, no room for error - and it's like that because some of those buildings have been there for 600 years)
Different road construction. (Already talked about lack of medians and breakdown lanes in europe. Country roads generally don't have shoulders or ditches - if you go off the road to the right, you are in the farmer's field.)
