Thread: backing it in

    Re: backing it in

Sounds a little easier to initiate on a supermoto? Looks like one has to use alot more rear brake on a SS especially with a slipper clutch?

Do you point at airplanes and say "That's a car?"

those were corner exit slides initiated by throttle application.

Backing it in is not the same and is done for different reasons.

For those interested in trying, read this

    http://www.supermotoracer.com/SMR%20...2_backitin.pdf

The same principals apply to roadrace bikes, however, roadrace suspension carries and stores MUCH more energy because of the extra weight the bikes have.

When you put a bike sideways, the rear shock will compress, this stores energy in the spring, which is going to be released at some point.

A properly configured roadrace setup will normally have a relatively quick rebound circuit to keep the rear tire on the ground.

This quick release of the stored energy in the spring is what causes the corner entry highside when you back it in and don't get it right.

Rich, you get one on one instruction at our next trackday.

If you highside, I'll laugh and drive your wife home when you go to the hospital

you use NO rear brake at all to initiate the slide.

the rear brake is used to decrease the arc of the turn as you slide, dragging the rear slightly will tighten up the slide.

for this to work, the rear wheel MUST remain spinning, the arc of the turn in slide can be controlled by increasing or decreasing the speed the rear wheel spins at. the gearbox/slipper clutch act at a constant rate, the clutch slips X amount under X load based on the weight of the reaction spring in the slipper unit, using the rear brake allows you to modulate the rear wheel speed.

Thing of it as a backwards throttle.

With throttle, the more you apply, the more the tire wants to accelerate and spin, causing the bikes line to widen.

with the rear brake, the more that is applied, the slower the rear wheel spins and the line of the bike tightens up.

    Clear as mud?

A couple of books I've got try and explain how it's done, I haven't gotten that far yet so I haven't tried. When I get home I'll get the names of the books for you. But Recip's explanation above is almost exactly what the book says. Ever drift a rear wheel drive car? The principle seems the same.

However they do stress that the best way to learn how to back it in is not on the track and not with your pretty zx10r. If you want to try it on the track I hear those Racer5 bikes may be able to do this and thus it might be a safer/cost effective starting point.

    Re: backing it in

its NOTHING like drifting in a car.

drifting in a car is done with the application of power and controlled wheelspin.

This is NOT the same as backing it in.
