Not wanting a small bike because you "don't look like some giant" is the wrong reason. My suggestion would be to start out on something smaller like a Ninja 250 or even a Ninja 650 R or SV 650. Also, buying your first bike used is a good idea because you WILL drop it at some point. There are lots of much better options than an R1 as your first bike.
"You live more in five minutes on a bike like this going flat out than some people live in a lifetime." (Burt Munro)
Two reasons:
A small motorcycle is not likely to let you do things that can kill or maim you.
A small used motorcycle has probably seen some abuse, and you will
give it some more, because in your ignorance you will make errors.
You may be able to afford to repair the damage that you do to it.
I mean no disrespect here; ignorance is the lack of knowledge.
All of us started with no knowledge whatever. Now we have some.
Motorcycle riding is a complex subject, and you need to learn.
To learn, you must survive, and a hot crotch rocket will not encourage
your survival. It will tempt you to make horrible mistakes, and give
you the power to make those mistakes very costly for you and for others.
I started with a really shabby 165 two-stroke bike in 1961. Here I am.
Now I ride a 650 all around North America - I mean it, ten provinces and
thirty-eight states. If you want to do the same, start with a bike that
will not cost a mint to repair, and will not go very fast.
I have another bike, the mighty CBR-125R, and I enjoy it a whole bunch.
Give it some consideration, because it is a whole lot of fun.
I wish you good luck, and the best way to have good luck is
to listen to the advice around here, then decide for yourself.
"Stay at least one standard deviation away from everybody else."
Here's an honest 2 cents
Any bike can get you in all sorts of dead.
This one as the ability to do it allot faster.

hahha... so was I in the 9th grade.
Listen to your Ego, get the R1, and hope to god when you crash that you walk away from it. ORRRRR....listen to the knowledgeable members here and get on something more new-rider appropriate.
Like the guy above said, they can all kill ya, this one will do it sooooo much faster.
And Reciprocity is wrong, the ZX-14 is what you really want.
It's the Least I Could Do
This motorcycle is simply too goddamn fast to ride at speed in any kind of normal road traffic unless you're ready to go straight down the centerline with your nuts on fire and a silent scream in your throat.
I've met somebody who started on a ducati 1098. It can be done, you just have to be extra diligent throwing all that power around.
if you understand the difference between on/off switch and roll gas, and you have a brain. you will be fine.
but you may found riding bike with less power much more enjoyable, as you will have a comfort of opening full throttle on corner exits with out the fear of having something unexpected may happen ( high side ) and etc....
on other hand you seems to be a big boy. and you have a time of testing maximum performance of your toys way behind you as i think.
...if you hold an axe in one hand it does it mean you have to chop off the another right away.
and this message I will send to lovely insurance companies...
