Angry '09 Ninja 250: Ignition - key won't go to 'ON' position

Put the key into the ignition and it won't turn to the 'ON' position.

Tried wiggling the handlebars while fiddling with the key. Nothing.
Tried rolling the bike back and forth while fiddling. Nothing.

Warranty expired back in March. Go figure.

Stupid thing is jammed. Wtf? Bike only has 12,000kms on it!

Anyone else have this problem with this bike?

Key isn't bent. It opens the tank and the rear seat.

Tried the spare key also...doesn't go to 'on' position. Spare key also opens tank and rear seat fine.

    Wrong key? Very funny!

try pulling out the key, turning it 180 degrees and then putting it back in.

for some reason, on my sv, the key can only go in one way. if i get it wrong, i just try the other side and it always works.

not sure this will help, but i know it's an issue for me.

Push down and turn it at the same time. It should work.

Try to put some graphite lube in there if nothing else works.

+1, my R6 ignition did the same thing. A few squirts of the teflon multilube stuff from Lowe's in the key hole and it worked perfect 1st try after that

I suspect someone tried to steal your bike, maybe a scrwdriver has been forced into the ignition, damaging tublers, rendering the key useless?

Could also be the steering lock causing issues. Try turn the bars fully and then turn the key. One of my old bikes always gave me issues when the steering lock was on.

I'll give the teflon multilube thing a try...

The bike was parked in the garage after a ride - no tampering by thieves...

I'd rather not hotwire it every time

Tried turning the handle bars fully and also all the way to the right...still won't go..

LOL. coming from you, this can be taking in so many ways.

some of the pins may be stuck in place. try tapping it lightly with hammer or something like that while turning it.

Re: '09 Ninja 250: Ignition - key won't go to 'ON' position

Ok. So after none of the above (including lubing and tapping) worked, the hubby was able to fix it.

The silver portion within the ignition had rotated out of whack on it's own. Hubby took the tip of the key and gently rotated it back, put the key in, and voila!

    Weird.

This bike is tempermental. It seems it got jealous of him riding my Yami...lol
