    "SAFETY BUG" police cars

Anyone see a VW Beetle police car marked with the words "SAFETY BUG?" I saw one this morning heading southbound on the DVP. Should we be cautious near these police cars or are they just another shiny example of our city wasting our tax payers' money?

Seen this thing about a month ago. I was on a major highway, I get into another lane to pass, I was about to punch it to a speed I won't even post when I see this thing in front of me. In shock I got off the gas and rode speed limit. Lol

    I have seen one.
I enjoy listening to the radio at a reasonable volume from nine to eleven.

If it is driven by a cop it can pull you over, better safe than sorry.

Not sure where you have been, but they had these when I was in kindergarten. That was in 1964.

They are for community relations work, mostly. Visiting schools and such. While they are not pursuit rated, they can pull you over, and you are still required to obey them.

FWIW: if it bears the police logo and colours, it is being operated by a police officer with full powers of that job. If it is a civilian driving the car, it will have orange flags on the roof saying so.

I guess this includes parking officers too then. There was one ripping down St. Clair Ave. last night and I followed him for a while, he was going a good 25-30kph over .. wondered if he would actually be able to pull me over for following him so fast...

No, as parking officers are not sworn peace officers. While the PKE cars in Toronto may bear the TPS logo, they do not say POLICE on them in a clear fashion to identify them as a police vehicle. Also, they only have yellow lights, for which you have no obligation to stop for.

even if it was the cops surely they couldnt do you as (assuming its the same as europe) unless they have their blue lights and or sirens on they are suppose to be obeying the normal rules of the road. Therefore if it got brought to court the officer driving should also be done and even most cops wont be stupid enough to leave themselves this open

    Re: "SAFETY BUG" police cars

99% of all police cars are not "suped up" beyond minor suspension work, and a heavy duty alternator. Otherwise they are usually the performance-end version of their civilian counterparts, such as the Impala PPV being an Impala SS.

Even then, their trim depends on their duty. They will only get the upgrades if they are police packaged vehicles, to be used in full-duty work. Pursuit-rated cars get all the goodies (and this is the majority), while the vehicles that are not likely to ever encounter this situation such as the safety bug, or the 4wd Tahoe, will likely be a base model civilian trim car.

Those beetles are over 10 years old and were given to several Police departments by VW Canada and their dealers. OPP, Hamilton and Metro all had them for community work and many are still running.

So is this the procedure to pass these "SAFETY BUGS?"

    1. Slow down upon approaching from rear
    2. Flip plate up
    3. Down shift twice
    4. Pin
    5. OPTIONAL: raise middle finger
