Anyone been to James Bay recently?

Was wondering if the SEBJ camp was still around at 257kms up the James Bay road.

See KM 257 on this page:

Was there last August/September. We camp right by the river in the pinic area. Not a good idea, rapids are LOUD, but the river is dammed now, so it might be quieter. I think theplace you are talking about is still there.

I went up there with Vlad a couple years ago. There was a 'campground' there.....well, more of a parking lot with a little grassy section for a tent. I don't think anyone was camping there, and it is cold at night up there. Watch out for the bears.

I was on that trip with Vlad and zooropa_chris, and I'm going back over the Canada Day long weekend. I'm looking forward to taking pics of the dammed Rupert River from the same spot where I took shots a couple of years ago, sort of a before and after.

I'm sure the "campground" is still there. I wouldn't be too inclined to camp there, though. Between the bugs, the bears, the cold and the wet, I'd be more inclined to just push on.

When are you planning to go?

Re: Anyone been to James Bay recently?

Thanks for all the replies. I know there are camping spots along the James Bay Road. But on the website, and in my searches I have read there is a spot where there is lodging, and a cafeteria and sometimes gas. (NOT the gas spot at 381 kms up the road:

The compound on the west side of the Road here is an SEBJ camp. I heard it was re-opened in March 2005 and had some lodging available ($110 per night), cafeteria, limited supply of gas for emergencies, garage for do-it-yourself repairs with an air compressor. However, I do not know if this is still the case, therefore don't count on it.
Just curious cause if I go I'd like to plan the route that I stop somewhere along the James Bay road.....or just plow through to Radisson.

Though most of you seem to be pushing me away from the camping possibility.

Interesting. When I was there, there was nothing else besides 381.

It's a long day, for sure, but when we did it the first time we left early in the morning, stopped quite a bit and for significant periods of time, and we still made it to Radisson way before sundown. We cruised that road at 140+, so the miles really went quickly.

    You going Canada Day weekend?
You bet. 5 days, there and back, including the dam tour while we're there.

if anyone wants to go but needs to bring extra gear with them, i'd be happy to come along with my cage as i'm working in montreal most of the time until october.

You can throw your tenting gear and extra jerrycans of petrol in the back of the cage and enjoy the bikes properly.

140 km/h?!?! Holy hell....I ain't going that fast. That's a sure way to get my bike to run out of gas quickly.

LOL....the Dam tour? You get to meet the Dam workers, and take the Dam bus there and back?

Seriously? The dam tour is amazing. They take you out for a half day, and give you the lowdown on all of the engineering that went into the dams.

We all thought it was seriously cool - check this link for another RR and a picture of the Giant's Staircase http://www.ebai.ca/vacation/2006/Jam...2006_0805.html

It seems silly to me to go all that way and not see the reason that the road exists in the first place.

Just before the Rupert River picnic area, there's one of those cone shape buildings that store road salt and that kind of stuff. Looked like its always open as there's nothing to steal. Wished I had found that place earlier on our trip as we had to camp in a storm.

For those who have been up there at all: what is the availability of 90+ (premium) grade gasoline? Both my bike and car require it.

I hear it's only regular on the James Bay Road.

You'll only find regular from Matagami northwards, and even in Matagami, I think that it's hit / miss.
