It's a matter of taste I guess. I find it a bit too bright for me. I suppose I could get used to it, but honestly I prefer GTAM...

Well, there are literally thousands of templates.

Isn't there a way to offer different colour schemes for users to choose? If they want to change the style of it, fine, but make sure people can choose a colour scheme that won't kill the eyeballs like the black background. I skip right over sites with light text on black/dark backgrounds.

Paul already added a slightly darker theme (see drop down box at lower left of template). Personally I like the current template more than most of the other "modern" templates. They just add lots of fluff at the expense of readability to look newer.
