    Electronically Challenged

I am leaving for a trip in a couple weeks and want the GPS with me. I am horrible at wiring and electronics and need help!

What do I need to install a cigarette lighter on my bike to power the GPS? In my head all I need to do is run pos and neg wires from battery terminals to the cig.lighter, plug in GPS and enjoy. With my luck my GPS and I would be on fire about 3km down the road.

It doesn't have to look good or be permanent, the power cable for the GPS is plenty long that the cig.lighter can be left in the faring or under the seat.

The GPS is a Garmin 265T.

    The bike is a 2007 VFR800.

What else do I need other than the outlet? Any tips or advise?

    Thanks in advance!

You need an in-line fuse in the positive side of that circuit, as close to the battery as possible, and there needs to be NO possibility of any wiring between the battery terminal and that fuse holder of being shorted out against the frame or crushed or rubbed between other objects.

You may find that your bike already has a fused accessory power wire and a ground wire that is meant for this purpose. If that's the case, use that.
