Riding boots are a must. I'm taller, almost 5'8", but started on an SV650S, which is reasonably tall... I couldnt flat foot it without boots, but could WITH boots.
Also look into having your seat shaved down. I had a guy take the vinyl off my seat, shave about 1" off it, replace the vinyl, and lo and behold, I could almost flat foot without boots. Cheap and easy, and effective.

...And your bum might get sore after longer rides.
I'm on a Honda right now and the seat is brutal already, I would never consider removing padding from that brick.
My first bike was an EX250. I was able to reach better. I had a pair of Nike Shox that I wore a lot. The comfort of a sneaker with a bit of a heel. Worked like a charm. Just too bad they don't sell high-top shox to protect the ankle... or maybe they do!? I should go check. lol
