Another option you might want to consider for long rides is an airhawk. I used it last year on my trip, and it helped quite a bit. A lot cheaper than getting a new seat too.

i looked at the airhawk at peterborough cycle salvage and i am not sure about it. you have used it? what do you weigh? what benfits do you get from it exactly? thanks for the info.

The biggest benifit I can see it that the inflatable bladders don't let your butt get too numb, because you can shift the weight around easily. The key is not filling it with too much air, otherwise it feels like you're sitting on a giant whoppie cusion tha won't pop.... if you put in just a little bit of air, it's just right. It does add some height to your seat though.
I weigh about 215 lbs to answer your question.
