09 nissan frontier or toyota tacoma

Tacoma:
Pros:
- better resale value, has 4 cyl 4X4 with extended cab, better fuel efficiency, much better safety (crash protection)
- disadvantage - I have heard of tailgate getting damaged because the top layer is weak, most child seats do not work well on the extended cab because of the angle they sit at.

Frontier:
Pros: Usually cheaper especially if buying used, no issue with tailgate getting squished, personally I like the styling better
cons: Safety especially in a T-bone, thirsty engines, no 4cyl 4x4., lower resale value

Tailgate issue was on the Tundras, and only on the 07's I have an 08 and it never had the tail problem because they fixed it on the 08's...

Tailgates were only weak '05 - '07. They were reinforced in '08.

I have an '05 and have not had a problem with the gate when loading the bike... just don't jump on it like a diving board. Gates are easy to reinforce need be.

If fuel efficiency is your reasoning to buying a midsize truck, take a good look at the 09 Ford F150. They are available with a no charge upgrade, as long as you yield tyo the rule of towing less than 6500 lbs.
The upgrade features a 3 valve cylinder head layout, and a 6 speed auto trans instead of the usual 5 speed one.
I have a friend who just bought one, in 4x4, 4 door quad cab. He gets 23-24 mpg on the highway with it. That is easily on par with the fuel economy you'll get with a Tacoma or Frontier, with the bonus of added space in the truck, larger bed, and increased capacity both payload and towing.

If you want a small truck because it's small, I'd toyota all the way. longest lasting trucks on the market. And higher resale value. And better looking by far.
