Re: My KLR gets a new can
I used to have one on my car many years ago(when I was young and stupid), not sure if they are still made the same way but the core rusted out within a season of use. The core held the nuts for the bolts that tie down the discs so when the core rusted the bolts had nothing to fasten to and were useless, the baffling\tuning achieved by the discs went bye bye. Hope they are made better these days

Thanks guys, I'll mount it, but I'll keep the stock one handy to swap back should the need arise.

You're killing me! I'm laughing so hard it hurts!
The truth of the matter is you're correct. By the time you're tired of upgrading the weak bits, the saggy bits, and the oil burning bits, some mentions KTM and you wanna spit at them. :)
I have a bad history of pushing the suspension too far with jumps the bikme was never designed to do, with a rider that far outweighs the Kawasaki test pilot that okayed the oem suspension back in Japan. Consequently I've found that when the swingarm smacks the muffler it'll end in tears. :)
I'm on my third stock exhaust with an upgraded rear shock, and this exhaust is a trial to see if I like the sound better than tweety bird that I've gotten used to.
I saw one pic from Happycrappy of a grenaded supertrapp that lost it's end cap and melted his fender as it left the bike.
So how does one go about preventing rust inside a muffler? Oil spray? :D
I do appreciate the comments, good and bad.
Re: My KLR gets a new can
Other than the falling apart issue, they do at least provide tons more room for wheel travel. I run a slightly wider tire, and the stock pipe rubbed it immediately on flat ground.
Re: My KLR gets a new can
I would absolutely love to run a wider tire, but on the front. Say an 18" rim laced on so I could choose almost any current tire and tube combo, and corner like it was on rails with the street set fitted. The 21" front is only really lame trying to climb out of atv ruts. Or is that me?! :D

The DR650 crowd uses 2001-2003 Gixxer 600/750/1000 mufflers. Outside dimensions are all the same (17.5" long x 4.75" dia. iirc) The 1000 are titanium internal. Very light. It's become such a popular mod that Hindle and Two Bros. make a mid pipe for that. Sounds great. So far I've bought 7 mufflers between $25 and $75. Midpipes are pricey but I also had a cheap one bent up at the muffler shop.
The other thing is the carb. You don't realize how bad a CV carb is until you go to a flat slide pumper. The deficiancies of a CV are masked on a multi cylinder engine but on a big single they're really noticeable. The biggest gains from a FS/P is in the lower rpms. The difference is quite remarkable.
Are there F/S kits for the KLR650?

I haven't seen much else on it, and it looks like it died after one post. I drilled the slide for better vacuum response, and I have to tell you, after I installed the KLX needle kit in place of the stock needle, the response was great! That bike is jetted so lean out of the factory that mine would peter out going uphill, now it runs rich and keeps pulling towards redline.
But I put in a 685 kit, so with the airbox, carb and exhaust I may have to have it tuned by rejetting.
Re: My KLR gets a new can
lol, useless post, not worth chewing the fat about motobikes here, so sorry.
Re: My KLR gets a new can
There were a ton of new things that got done to it right at the end of the season when it got down to around 4 degrees celsius and the bike got harder to start. I did the carb mods, added the idle mixture adjust screw, then had it bored out to a 685 and a burnt exhaust valve replaced. When I change the exhaust I'm going to need some good warm days to get some consistent input into how far out of whack the air and fuelling has become. Perhaps I'll bug Brian P for some time with his expertise instead of doing it all through trial and error. Then again, I will definitely learn more about air/fuel ratios and the effect they have on my KLR.
Re: My KLR gets a new can
have an 02 bung welded to the exhaust and let brian show you how to read it(a/f guage), thats the only way to sort the jetting short of a dyno
Why I hate Supertrapp ISD2
I lost the end cap somewhere in Truro Nova Scotia after it spat bolts out all across Labrador and Newfoundland, then lost the silencer on Sunday on my way down to the motorcycle show. :(
Pros: It's the lightest exhaust in the world
Cons: The cops want to know who was shooting a handgun on Lakeshore (downshifting)

Maybe a Jardine or Big Gun EVO?
