Re: feed back and opinions on this bicycle
Tell him to start with something cheaper. Best bet is to go to a bike shop and ask them for some advice. They will determine what kind of riding he wants to do and tailor the bike to suit his needs. He can also get the proper riding gear and have the bike set up properly.
In bicycling speed is something you earn not something you buy. You have to put in the miles and pay for speed with suffering. IMO a slow rider on expensive equipment screams "look at me I've got money", but nothing else. I am not sure this is true with all cyclists but a lot of the riders I know have similar opinions. It's sort of like the new 16 year old rider on a GSXR600 that his parents just bought for him, who has no idea how to do anything but twist the throttle in a straight line.
I once had a rich guy look at my bike and said something along the lines "if I had an expensive bike like that I'd be fast too". You can buy the best bike but you can't buy speed; one of the reasons I love bicycling.

Asians don't ride bicycles unless it's a Flying Pigeon or a Supercycle with a plastic bag on the seat and 24" wheels..

OP - The Scalpel is nice but it all depends on what he wants to do with it. I got back into MTB this year and did lots of research.
